The first webinar was recorded on May 16th, 2019 and was followed by more than 100 people. The webinar presented the preliminary results of the GEOENVI project, which has been working since November 2018. It has also been open to inputs and questions by participants, which were welcome to provide their perspective or comment on the methodology of the project.

Presentations:

The objective of the GEOENVI project is to answer environmental concerns in terms of both impacts and risks, by first setting an adapted methodology for assessing environment impacts to the project developers, and by assessing the environmental impacts and risks of geothermal projects operational or in development in Europe.

The GEOENVI project has the objective to make sure that deep geothermal energy can play its role in Europe’s future energy supply in an increasingly sustainable way and to create a robust strategy to answer environmental concerns. It will engage with all geothermal stakeholders to ensure the exchange of best practices, the test of harmonized methods in selected areas and then, to facilitate its replication across Europe. The overarching purpose of the GeoEnergy Europe project is to create a European Strategic Cluster Partnership (ESCP) with a focus on the sustainable use of the subsurface for energy, or “Geo-Energy”, as well as to develop, & propose an implementation roadmap for, a joint internationalisation strategy to help this ESCP go international, as encouraged by the COSME call for projects “Clusters Go International”, and more specifically Strand 1a of the call. Building such a strategic partnership would help create a sort of European label for export opportunities and cooperation in know-how and technology transfer with third countries.

USA, Hawaii: State Needs to Approve Re-Start of Puna Geothermal Venture

Puna geothermal plant will need state approval to rebuild after eruption (Hawaii News Now)

A Hawaii geothermal power company must win state approval before rebuilding transmission lines wiped out by volcanic eruption.

News outlets reported Wednesday that Puna Geothermal Venture must hold a public hearing and receive state Public Utilities Commission permission before rebuilding. The plant in Pohoiki on the Big Island was damaged in last year’s Kilauea eruption.

Puna Geothermal officials say they are in negotiations with Hawaii Electric Light Company for a new power purchase agreement that would set out terms and prices for electricity from the rebuilt plant. A May 9 letter from the utilities commission says any new agreement will require its approval.

An official says the company intends to resume production by the end of this year but is reviewing the letter to determine how it might affect plans.

USA: Funding for Projects to Develop Downhole Tools to Enable Enhanced Geothermal Systems

ARPA-E: Innovating Through Unconventional Ideas (News Release)

Earlier this year, the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) at the U.S. Department of Energy announced funding for a range of the most innovative and unconventional ideas across the energy technology spectrum, exploring high-risk R&D that could lead to the development of disruptive technologies. The topics explored under this opportunity are not part of existing ARPA-E programs, but if successful could establish new program areas for ARPA-E to further explore.

The second of these topics, downhole tools to enable enhanced geothermal systems, seeks to better develop novel, low-cost sensor technologies that can help mitigate risks and lower costs for deep, extremely hot enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) by better characterizing rock formations and fluid enthalpy at depth. EGS technology has the potential to improve the economic cost-competitiveness of geothermal energy, while also lessening geographic restrictions of geothermal as an energy sources.

The U.S. possesses a massive strategic asset in its existing supply of geothermal energy, and deep extremely hot EGS represent a potential zero-carbon resource capable of delivering hundreds of gigawatts of baseload electricity with a very small land footprint per unit power. Additionally, developing downhole sensor technologies leverages existing domestic oil and gas industry’s sophisticated subsurface techniques and sources of human capital, offering the potential to improve and innovate on technologies that could also be utilized elsewhere in the aerospace, automotive, nuclear, and even space exploration fields.

Hungary: Climeon to Supply Geothermal Heat Power Modules to New Market

Climeon wins first geothermal order in Hungary (News Release)

Swedish company Climeon has received an order for a geothermal Heat Power project in Hungary, a new geographical market for the company. 

Baseload Capital Hungary has placed an order of Heat Power modules with an order value of SEK 9 million, excluding service fees and software licenses. 

Mannvit and Cam Consulting will participate in the licensing process and the construction of the power plant. 

The Heat Power modules are to be delivered in 2019 and will produce clean electricity from an already existing geothermal well in Szentes, in the south-eastern part of Hungary.

USA, Hawaii: Puna Geothermal Venture Slated for November 30 Start-Up

Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), with the help of Hawaii Electric Light (HELCO), is moving forward with plans to restart power production on the lower East Rift Zone after the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano.

On March 8, HELCO filed a letter notifying the Public Utilities Commission, or PUC, of its Rebuild Agreement with PGV, which includes the rebuilding of the Pohoiki Switching Station and 69 kV transmission lines. 

Puna Geothermal Venture will hold its next community meeting on Friday, May 17, at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Officials representing PGV, the Hawaiʻi Electric Light Company, and Hawaiʻi County will be in hand to provide updates.

The biggest hindrance to geothermal development are permitting and other regulatory barriers that are more stringent than for oil and gas.

Moving towards centralized permitting and more pragmatic environmental reviews could lead to a 500% increase in geothermal capacity using existing technology and up to 100 gigawatts (GW) (an increase of 3700%) with new technology.

Philippines: Tender to be Offered to Shareholders of Phinma Petroleum and Geothermal Inc.

Phinma Energy eyes tender offer (Manila Standard)

Phinma Energy Corp. said Tuesday it will conduct a tender offer to shareholders of Phinma Petroleum and Geothermal Inc. (PPG) as a part of the sale of its shares to AC Energy Inc., the power unit of the Ayala Group.

PPG, formerly Trans-Asia Petroleum Corp., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Phinma Energy.  

Phinma Energy currently owns 126,838,679 common shares, representing 50.735 percent of the total issued and outstanding capital stock of PPG. After the transaction, it will own an aggregate of 189,801,107 common shares, representing 75.92 percent of the total issued and outstanding capital stock of the company.

Phinma Energy will be making a voluntary tender offer for the remaining 59,208,851 common shares representing 23.684 percent.

Croatia: 20 MW ORC Geothermal Power Plant to be Built in Slatina Region

Croatia’s Geo Power Zagocha plans to build 20 MW geothermal power plant (Balkan Green Energy News)

Croatia’s Geo Power Zagocha intends to build 20 MW geothermal power plant in the Slatina region, according to an application submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy.

The plant will use Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system to produce electricity, which will be delivered to the distribution network of HEP ODS, Croatia’s state power grid operator, reads the application for determining the need for an environmental impact assessment.

The plant will be located in the Virovitičko-Podravska county, in the Čađavica municipality.

There are currently three geothermal wells (PS-2, PS-4 and PS-5) in the area where the power plant will be built.

The plant will use geothermal water from the existing well PS-5 and, possibly, a new well, which is planned around 900 meters to the east of the future geothermal power plant, Geo Power Zagocha said in the application.

We started drilling our second well on Saturday evening.

Progress has been good and this morning we have reached a depth of 150m. As with the first well we have encountered some hard rocks and, as a result, there is some vibration in the drill pipe and top drive of the rig. This is causing a clattering noise which is a bit louder than our normal drilling noise but, as we get a bit deeper and are able to put more weight on the bit, it will quickly reduce.

With £2.4 million from Cornwall Council and £5 million from private investors, Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL) is drilling two deep geothermal wells at its site within the United Downs Industrial Estate and will build a 1-3 MW pilot power plant to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of supplying both electricity and heat.

East Africa: Geothermal in Region Represents $40 Billion Investment Opportunity - GE Report

Re-imagining the future of power in Sub-Saharan Africa (GE Power)

Currently at 64 GW, the region’s power generation capacity is projected to grow at 4% each year across the various fuel sources to help meet the energy demand of the growing African population. The region’s current energy mix, primarily dominated by hydro and coal, is becoming more diversified following the rising interest in renewable technologies such as solar and wind.

Key themes in the regional energy transformation are centered on the 3Ds; Decarbonization, Decentralization and Digitization. On decarbonization, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have influenced the preference for wind, solar, geothermal and hydro as part of a more environmentally friendly energy mix.

Africa has a total installed geothermal generating capacity of over 644 MW. The
geothermal capacity for the East Africa region is estimated to exceed 15,000 MW, representing a $40 billion investment opportunity. Geothermal is an appropriate technology to meet base load energy demand but the high initial financing costs and exploration risks have made it a challenge for countries to increase capacity.

Philippines: EDC to Expand at Existing Geothermal Power Plants

EDC to expand geothermal assets (Business Mirror)

Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. (EDC) said last week it would carry out “a small expansion” of its geothermal assets.

“We have a few plants lined up for EDC. They are small, less than 30 MW,” said EDC President Richard Tantoco when asked what renewable-energy projects are in store for EDC this year.

Tantoco said these small expansion projects involve EDC’s geothermal plants at Leyte, Bacon-Manito (BacMan) and Mount Apo.

“Just a couple in the pipeline and we are likely to issue notice to proceed on one of them within the next six months—geothermal, brownfield and within the existing assets for expansions,” he added.

California’s rapid renewable energy expansion has led to a boom in large-scale solar and wind projects and a huge expansion of rooftop solar. As costs have fallen, solar energy has become much less expensive, and utility-scale solar and wind are now less expensive than new gas plants, and far less expensive than existing coal. 

Geothermal energy has historically been a large part of California’s renewable energy portfolio, but its role in California’s renewable power supply has steadily declined. California utilities have contracted for virtually no new geothermal as part of their push to comply with the California 50 percent renewable portfolio standard.

The reasons most often cited for why geothermal has been left behind are that it costs more than solar or wind and utilities’ principal goal in building their renewable portfolios is to minimize their cost of complying with the state renewable standard.

California’s RPS program has been widely hailed as a success and yet the resulting renewable portfolio is unbalanced. That’s partly because of the program’s focus on minimizing cost. Even though solar has the lowest levelized cost of energy, because of how much solar we already have on the system, with more being added every year, the incremental value of additional solar is less than at lower penetration levels. In addition, in the Spring and other times of year, the abundance of solar leads to negative pricing on the grid, and the curtailment of thousands of megawatts of solar and other renewables, resulting in lost revenue for renewable projects and higher costs for consumers. 

In addition to helping provide much needed balance to California’s renewable portfolio, geothermal can provide valuable grid reliability benefits, which mistakenly, are not considered by the Public Utilities Commission when implementing the renewable portfolio standard. Because geothermal plants use traditional spinning generators and produce power around the clock, they can reduce reliance on natural gas for reliability. A vivid example is found in the most recent Transmission Plan adopted by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which showed that abundance of solar and lack of geothermal generation (or any type of energy storage) in the Imperial Valley to the East of San Diego results in continued reliance on natural gas plants to provide reliability when the sun goes down, resulting in higher costs and increased emissions. 

Philippines: Geothermal Energy Developer Raises Funds for Future Projects

Listed Basic Energy Corp. is seeking to double its authorized capital stock to allow potential strategic investors to invest in the company and to secure funds in the future.

Basic Energy said its board of directors approved the increase its authorized capital stock from P2.5 billion to P5 billion, comprising 20 billion shares with a par value of P0.25 apiece.

Basic Energy is developing several geothermal projects namely the Mabini Geothermal Service Contract in Batangas, Mt. Mariveles Geothermal Project in Bataan and Mt. Iriga Geothermal Project in Albay.

Recently, two of its geothermal contracts were terminated by the Department of Energy, namely the East Mankayan and West Bulusan geothermal projects for failing to complete the pre-development of the sites.

Geothermal energy has helped bring tremendous wealth to Iceland and can play a huge role in the economic development of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Chief executive officer (CEO) of Reykjavik Geothermal, Gudmundur Thoroddson, made this point on Monday while speaking at Lot 14, Bamboo Range.

Thoroddson, an Icelander, spoke about the benefits of geothermal energy while standing in the area where this country has started exploratory drilling under the direction of the St Vincent Geothermal Company Limited, which is owned by the Icelandic company Reykjavik Geothermal and the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Electricity licensing services can now be accessed more easily and quickly through Online Single Submission (OSS) which can be accessed on the website http://oss.go.id, which is currently handled by Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM) since January 2, 2019. OSS itself was officially launched in July 2018 under the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy.

One of the permits handled in the OSS system is the licensing process to build a power plant. "There are 6 general electricity licenses that have entered OSS, as well as 4 additional permits for geothermal plants, all of which have now been processed through OSS," said Head of the Public Information Services Communication Bureau and Cooperation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Agung Pribadi.

Meanwhile, 4 geothermal permits that have been processed through OSS include the Assignment of Preliminary Geothermal Survey, Geothermal Permit, Geothermal Support Business Agreement, and Permit for Use of Geothermal Explosives Warehouse.

First Gen Corp., a Lopez Group company, reported a net income of $77 million (P4 billion) in the first quarter, up 28 percent from $60 million (P3 billion) year-on-year.

First Gen said net income attributable to equity holders in the first quarter reached $81 million (P4.2 billion), up 104 percent from $40 million (P2 billion) in the same period last year, due to the higher electricity sales of its natural gas, geothermal and hydro platforms, foreign exchange gains and lower deferred income taxes.

The company’s recurring earnings from its geothermal, wind, and solar platform surged to $26 million (P1.4 billion) in the first three months from $14 million (P700 million) in 2018 as the Unified Leyte and Tongonan geothermal plants normalized their operations and delivered higher earnings after recovering from the damage in the Leyte site caused by Typhoon Urduja in December 2017.

Dave Solan, a former professor and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adviser, has been tapped to serve as the Energy Department's deputy assistant secretary for renewable power, according to an internal agency memo.

Solan will join DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy on Monday, replacing Steve Chalk, a longtime agency official who is retiring at the end of the month.

Geoscience BC thanks the provincial government for granting $5 million in one-year bridge funding to support earth science research in British Columbia. 

The new funding will allow Geoscience BC to continue its minerals, energy and water related public earth science for an additional year, with many ongoing and new research projects set to begin in 2019-20.

New Geoscience BC projects launching in 2019 include a regional assessment of geothermal energy potential in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt in partnership with the Geological Survey of Canada.

Europe: Opportunity to Comment on Risk and Uncertainties Associated with Deep Geothermal Projects

It is also to learn more about needs from market actors as well as to collect potential ideas for exploiting outputs and results of operating geothermal plant. Answering the survey will help the GEORISK project partners to better shape future risk mitigation schemes.

GEORISK partners believe that a better assessment of the risk to establish risk mitigation schemes and so further improve geothermal market development. For this, we would much appreciate your contribution.

Thomas Öström, CEO Climeon: During the first months of 2019, we have taken further steps to increase the pace and width of our expansion, by finding strong partners such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures and through a directed new share issue which strengthened the cash position and added strong institutional investors in Europe and the US.

During the quarter, we delivered our first machines to customers within the geothermal area in Japan. The conditions for low temperature geothermal heat power in Japan are very good and the market potential is great, which is why Japan is a prioritized geographic market for Climeon. However, having had a representative office open for almost a year we can note that the local licensing processes that customers have to go through, including for drilling and connecting electricity, take time. It remains a challenge for us that it takes more time for customers within geothermal to get their sites and permits in place than they and we initially estimated. These external factors extend current lead times.

In Iceland, work with Varmaorka on our first joint geothermal power plant has continued at a good pace. After extensive testing of our machines and the customer's surrounding design, the customer approved the facility in March. Now long-term tests are underway with Varmaorka and the electricity company HS Orka before complete handover of the operation to Varmaorka. Along the way, we have encountered many challenges in the construction of this first geothermal power plant. Now, Varmaorka and Climeon are taking all the learnings from this intensive first power project into the next projects to become even better at building geothermal power plants and supply more local communities with green electricity.


USA: FERC Predicts an Additional 913 MW of Geothermal Steam Capacity Will be Added by 2022

FERC report indicates shining days for renewable energy sector (Greentech Lead)

The latest Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) report said solar, wind, and hydropower have accounted for 59.6 percent of new capacity added to the U.S. electricity generation mix during the first quarter of 2019.

Utility-scale renewable energy sources including biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind now account for 21.49 percent of the total installed operating generating capacity – more than double that of nuclear power (9.04 percent) and almost equal to that of coal (21.68 percent).

The total available installed geothermal steam generating capacity is now 3.84 GW which represents 0.32% of total capacity.

FERC reports that an additional 913 MW of geothermal steam capacity from 18 units will be added by 2022 with 280 MW being of "high probability".

United Kingdom: Geothermal Has the Look and Feel of an Energy Alternative Whose Time Has Finally Come

The United Downs Deep Geothermal Power Project in Cornwall promises to make deep geothermal energy generation a reality in the UK. Julian Turner talks to Robin Shail of the University of Exeter’s Camborne School of Mines, about the challenge of sourcing funding and drilling three miles below the surface.

Nearly 30 years after it was originally trialled in the UK, geothermal also has the look and feel of an energy alternative whose time has finally come. Unbeknown to many, from the mid-1970s through to 1991, the £42m Hot Dry Rock (HDR) project looked at the potential of deep geothermal drilling in the south west of England, where granites contain elevated levels of uranium, thorium and potassium, naturally occurring radioactive elements that generate heat as they decay over time.

“One of the reasons the HDR project didn’t go any further is that the UK was in the middle of the ‘dash to gas’ and enjoying cheap energy, and the issue of carbon-intensive power systems wasn’t really on the political agenda,” explains Robin Shail, senior lecturer in geology at the Camborne School of Mines (CSM), which led the original project.

“However, energy costs have since changed, the whole decarbonisation agenda has taken off, green power is seen as good and the economics of geothermal, while not entirely straightforward, have also been transformed. So, the time is right from an energy policy point of view, but also politically in terms of people’s perception of energy and its environmental impact.”

Even coming on the heels of the pulling out of Icelandic drilling equipment from the compound encompassing the MON3 well, the drilling site for the continuing project of “Unlocking the Geothermal Potential of Montserrat” and the news of the report that end of the project, Montserrat on Monday celebrated a milestone in the “green” renewable energy development.

“On geothermal, we have already two wells that have proven capacity to support our needs. And, a third well that has unfortunately met with technical difficulties. However, we are still moving forward to develop this form of green energy, through working with partners to bring geothermal power plant in place,” Premier Romeo said.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is pleased to announce this year’s Amateur Photo Contest. The purpose of the contest is to showcase quality photography featuring geothermal energy around the world.

The winners will be announced at the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo being held in Palm Springs, California, USA from September 15-18.

The first place winner will receive $150, second place - $100, and third place - $75. Honorable Mention photos will receive certificates.

"The injections were not flat in the first place and they are operational and out of the production well. When the power plant became in-operational, there were, if I recall right between three to four production wells, providing 38 megawatts with two of them providing the majority of the flow, and those are the wells that we are unplugging right now and very, very soon we will know how this is progressing. One thing we know for sure -- again for sure is an estimation that resource as it is, is warmer than it was before and it is there because we are monitoring the injection wells all the time. Now we have to unplug those three or four wells, it will take us some time, but we are optimistic as I said before that we will be -- as we are working in parallel, we will be operational by the end of this year."

Science & Technology: Low Enthalpy Geothermal Could Power New Desalination Method

New desalination method could get industry – and the environment – out of a very salty pickle (New Atlas)

"Hypersaline brine" is industrial waste-water with salt levels that exceed even that of seawater. It's a big, expensive, destructive problem which a team of engineers at Columbia University in New York City hope to solve with their solvent-based method of desalination.

The "temperature swing solvent extraction" or TSSE method – developed by a Columbia Engineering team led by assistant professor Ngai Yin Yip – is beautifully simple. It uses a solvent with temperature-dependent water solubility. Vary the temperature, and you vary the solubility. This solvent is added to the brine, where it floats above the denser salt-laden liquid. At room-temperature, water from the brine is drawn into the solvent. After this stage, the solvent is drawn off and warmed via low-grade heat under 70° C (158°F). The "temperature swing" nature of the solvent subsequently demixes it from the water (remember, this is a temperature-dependent solvent, where at higher temperatures, it holds less water). The resulting desalinated water then settles to the bottom, and is collected.

And speaking of sustainability, the low-heat requirements for the process is one of its most appealing elements. Depending on the location of the technology, this low, sub 70° C heat can be supplied conventionally at low cost, or sustainably from sources such as low-concentration solar, on-site waste heat from industrial processes or shallow-well geothermal.
