The GRC Annual Meeting & Expo is the industry’s largest annual gathering of leading geothermal energy scientists, producers, renewable energy industry stakeholders, regulators, utilities, and key associated business leaders. The four-day event will offer technical, policy, and market conference sessions, educational seminars, tours of local geothermal and renewable energy projects, and numerous networking opportunities.
Nearly 1,000 attendees came to the 2019 GRC Annual Meeting and Expo from just under 40 different countries, highlighting the GRC’s role in connecting the global geothermal energy community. With increasing interest in geothermal as a reliable source of renewable energy providing both flexible and baseload power production around the world, the GRC is looking ahead to an even stronger international attendance in 2020.

USA, Nevada: Geothermal Event! GRC Annual Meeting Venue Earns Energy Star Certification
Peppermill Receives EPA Energy Star Certification (KTVN)
Reno's Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino has earned the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for energy performance. A big part of that is due to the resort's onsite geothermal plant. It taps into the resources underneath the property.
"We take the geothermal out of the ground, we pump it to here we exchange the heat into a water source that we can circulate through the building," said John Kassai, Central Plant Manager for the Peppermill. "Then we take the geothermal, put it back in the ground across the property and we use the hot water and circulate it throughout the whole property."
They use it to heat the buildings, the pools, and the parking ramps in the winter. "As far as I know we're the largest single use geothermal provider in the nation," Kassai said. The Peppermill's energy score puts it in the top 10 percent of hotels in the country.

Geothermal Event! World’s Largest Annual Geothermal Energy Event Begins
Geothermal Energy Event Opens in Palm Springs
Nearly 1,000 attendees have gathered at the world’s largest annual geothermal energy event, the GRC Annual Meeting and Expo, September 15 to 18 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, Palm Springs, California, USA.
The city of Palm Springs welcomed an international audience at the Opening Session of the meeting on Monday, September 16. The session featured special guests and energy experts covering many aspects of geothermal and other renewable energy development.
In addition to keynote speeches by Supervisor Ryan Kelley (Chairman of the Board, Imperial County) and Assemblywoman Wendy Carrillo (California State Assembly), there were two panel discussions: The first commented on the state of the geothermal industry and how California can serve as a key guide for how the rest of the USA and world can transition to the new energy economy with geothermal as a central component of the energy mix. The second panel discussion focused on transmission issues, addressing the various elements of electricity transmission from the developer, engineering, utility and system operator’s perspective.
The Opening Session attracted leading researchers, academics, students, state and federal agency officials, and executives from notable companies such as Berkshire Hathaway Energy, CYRQ Energy, Calpine, Coso Energy, ENEL Green Power, Ormat Technologies, Inc., and others that develop, build, maintain and operate geothermal plants around the U.S. and the world.
This is the premier gathering to learn about the latest developments in geothermal energy. Last year, the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo hosted over 1,000 attendees from 34 different countries.
The GRC Annual Meeting offers technical, policy, and market conference sessions, educational seminars, tours of local geothermal and renewable energy projects, and numerous networking opportunities.

Save $50 for this premier geothermal energy event by registering before the event
Attendees who register before the event pay only $1,130 as Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) members or $1,330 if non-members. The non-member registration includes GRC membership through 2020. Students with a current identification card from an accredited institution pay just $175 which also includes GRC membership through 2020. Registration onsite at the event will incur a $50 processing charge.
In addition to the prestigious Technical Program, the three-day registration to the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo includes Sunday evening events until late (an Opening Reception, Outdoors Exhibits and an After-after Party!), the Opening Session on Monday morning, a Network Reception on Tuesday and the GRC Expo and lunch on all three days.

This is a “Call for Sessions” for the 2020 GRC Annual Meeting & Expo to be held at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nevada from October 18-21, 2020. We are inviting proposals for specific sessions at next year’s meeting. Sessions can be organized and led by up to three people, a session chair and two co-chairs. Successful session chairs will be expected to assist the technical chair to recruit authors and organize reviews. A session will include at least four papers.

As part of the Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) Annual Meeting & Expo in Palm Springs, California September 15-19 the GRC will present the entries from the 40th Amateur Geothermal Photo Contest. The contest serves to showcase the talent of the geothermal community as well as the beauty and intrigue found in every aspect of the geothermal industry.
Contestants from 8 countries around the world submitted 39 photos. Please enjoy the photos - they are free to use with the proper attributions (Photographer and Geothermal Resources Council). The winners will be presented at the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo.

The US geothermal power industry has experienced major flux in recent years. In the five-year period between 2012 and 2017, total growth equaled 0.2% compared to 15.2% in the previous five years (according to data from the Energy Information Administration). Importantly, geothermal energy is also experiencing significant technological improvements through research programs led by the European Union (EU), the US Department of Energy (DoE) and California Energy Commission (CEC), amongst others, as well as new investment from the private sector. Amidst the shifts, geothermal energy continues to offer considerable value for the power grid in terms of the quality and characteristics of the energy as a flexible and renewable form of baseload in the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable, energy economy.
There are also large growth opportunities in Co-production with oil & gas, Deep Direct Use, and Shallow Heat-pump applications, as evidenced by countries in Europe and through the DoE’s recent GeoVision study. Given these dynamic times, how do we take good advantage of these opportunities, encourage growth in the geothermal industry and facilitate greater penetration of geothermal energy into the world’s energy markets? The goal of the panel is to facilitate objective debate across a panel of experts and, using interactive Q&A with the audience, get to the heart of this question to inform the direction of our industry and community.
