USA, Nevada: Postdoc Opportunity at Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy

The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy (GBCGE) within the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applications from qualified candidates to fill a postdoctoral scholar position.

The GBCGE has received funding for a cooperative project with the US Department of State that aims to strengthen the capacity of foreign countries to develop their geothermal energy resource base. The project will involve capacity-building activities in several foreign countries and the USA, including delivering workshops and presentations, meeting foreign government stakeholders, peer to peer exchanges, provision of technical advice, and conducting geothermal resource assessments in country.

The post-doctoral scholar will be working in this project with other team members, and is integral to project success. They will also be joining a vibrant, motivated team in the GBCGE who are dedicated to geothermal science, education and knowledge transfer, and increasing our understanding of the geothermal resource potential in the western USA and abroad. Application deadline is 10th February 2018.

USA, Nevada: New Production Well to be Drilled at San Emidio Geothermal Facility

BLM Approves Production Well For San Emidio Geothermal Facility (News Release)

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Black Rock Field Office has approved a proposal submitted by US Geothermal Nevada LLC (USGN) to drill a new geothermal production well at the San Emidio Geothermal Facility. No new surface disturbance on BLM administered public lands will occur for this project since the well pad, and access to the well pads are all pre-existing and previously permitted.

The San Emidio Geothermal Facility is located 90 miles northeast of Reno and 12 miles south of the town of Gerlach, Washoe County, in the San Emidio Desert basin. The operation is currently a 14.7 megawatt binary cycle geothermal plant that has been producing reliable green energy since 1987. The facility sits on 40 acres of joint private land and BLM administered lands.

Sweden: Geothermal Energy Firm Creates Project Financing Company

Climeon owners set up geothermal project finance firm (Renewables Now)

The owners of Swedish clean-tech vendor Climeon AB have created a project financing company to accelerate global geothermal heat power projects, Climeon announced today.

Family-owned investment firm Gullspang Invest AB, LMK Forward AB, part of LMK Industri, and Stockholm-based investor Blue AB are jointly investing SEK 60 million (USD 7.3m/EUR 6.1m) in the new company called Baseload Capital. Climeon will be taking part through a minority holding of up to 20%, according to the announcement.

Baseload Capital will be investing mainly in geothermal energy, participating in projects both with equity and loans. The purpose of the new firm is to accelerate business opportunities for Climeon.

USA, Nevada: State Utility Looking for Up to Additional 330 MW Renewable Energy

2018 Renewable Energy Request for Proposals (NV Energy)

NV Energy is seeking up to 330 megawatts of additional long-term renewable energy to advance its commitment to clean energy for Nevada.

This 2018 Renewable Energy Request for Proposals also provides bidders the opportunity to propose supplemental battery energy storage systems that deliver at least 25 megawatts in short-term capacity. Details can be found in the 2018 Renewable Energy RFP Protocol Document, but key highlights are:
  • Deadline for bids is February 2, 2018;
  • Projects can range in size from 35 megawatts up to 330 megawatts;
  • Supplemental battery energy storage systems of at least 25 megawatts can be proposed in addition to renewable energy projects;
  • Projects must be capable of delivering energy to serve load in NV Energy’s retail service territory;
  • The projects must be approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada; and
  • Project proposals must allow for one of the following commercial operation dates:
    • On or before December 31, 2020 for at least 35 megawatts, but optional pricing is requested for a May 1, 2020 commercial operation date; or
    • On or before December 31, 2021 for up to an additional 295 megawatts, but optional pricing is requested for a May 1, 2021 commercial operation date.

Kenya: Exploration to Start Soon at Suswa Geothermal Power Project

Firm to set up geothermal plant (Daily Nation)

Chinese company  Zhejiang Kaishan Compressor Co. will begin exploration and drilling for geothermal power in Narok County in the next month.

The company’s president, Mr Kevin Cao, accompanied by his geologist and Energy ministry officials, were among a delegation that held a meeting with Narok Governor Samuel Tunai on Tuesday to discuss the prospect before the announcement was made.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Tunai said the company got the green light to drill steam wells in the Suswa South-Magadi-Shompole steam fields.

USA, California: Yesterday, Geothermal Energy Was the Number One Renewable in the Golden State

Geothermal Energy Tops Wind and Solar in California...Again

Yesterday in California, geothermal energy was the biggest provider of electricity from renewable resources to the CAISO grid, with over 23,000 MWh. Winds produced 10,184 MWh, solar energy (PV and thermal) peaked around midday and only supplied 10,794 MWh.

StimuFrac™: "Green" Fracking Fluid Can Be Used Virtually Anywhere (PNNL)

Non-toxic chemical reaction is anticipated to save water, money, and time for geothermal and oil and gas applications

Scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Washington developed an environmentally friendly “green” fracking fluid, called StimuFrac™. Rather than using large volumes of water and an immense amount of pressure to create fractures underground, this green fracking fluid relies on a safe chemical process to do the hard work.

What’s in the secret sauce? A chemical reaction that occurs when poly(allylamine) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are combined.

Think of the popping candy Pop Rocks© that “pop” when the ingredient COcomes into contact with your mouth. In a similar fashion, CO2 is added to the green fracking fluid and then reacts with the poly(allylamine) expanding in volume and creating pressure in addition to what already occurs during conventional hydraulic fracturing.

Not only could PNNL’s StimuFrac™ use significantly less water compared to conventional hydraulic fracturing methods—making it more environmentally friendly—it is expected to also significantly reduces costs. The additional pressure created when using PNNL’s fluid means less mechanical pressure is required, potentially less water is used, and fracturing can be done more quickly. All of these factors combined could reduce operating costs by 60 percent while increasing permeability up to 10,000 times compared to conventional fracturing methods.

United Kingdom: Scottish and Danish Companies Team Up to Develop Geothermal Heat Projects in Great Britain

Danish company Geoop has signed a memorandum of understanding with Townrock Energy of Aberdeen, Scotland to jointly promote green energy, develop projects and support initiatives in Britain regarding geothermal energy. A special focus will be on geothermal heat projects for district heating or similar larger consumer bases.

Geoop has been looking for geothermal energy projects with solid economic cases that will support the long-term visions of changing heat energy supplies to a low carbon source.

USA, California: GreenFire Energy Preparing to Demonstrate ECO2G Geothermal Power Generation Technology at Coso

GreenFire Energy prepares to launch full-scale geothermal power generation technology (Drilling Contractor)

Current conventional geothermal production is limited to permeable rock, but only 2% of geothermal resources in the US are within permeable formations, Joseph Scherer, President and CEO of GreenFire Energy, said at the IADC DEC Technology Forum in Houston on 15 November. The rest of the resources lie in impermeable rock, called hot dry rock.

To access these resources, GreenFire Energy is preparing to demonstrate ECO2G, a geothermal power generation technology, on an inactive well in Coso, California. The system circulates supercritical CO2 and other refrigerants in a closed-loop system to access geothermal resources that cannot be developed with existing geothermal technology. It can be also retrofitted into existing unproductive or marginal wells to produce 1 to 3 megawatts of power, and when developed to full scale, could be used in new wells to create competitively priced utility-scale power. USA: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Rejects DOEs Grid Resiliency Proposal

Trump-appointed regulators reject plan to rescue coal and nuclear plants (Washington Post)


The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Monday unanimously rejected a proposal by Energy Secretary Rick Perry that would have propped up nuclear and coal power struggling in competitive electricity markets.

The independent five-member commission includes four people appointed by President Trump, three of them Republicans. Its decision is binding.

Perry’s proposal favored power plants able to store 90 days fuel supply on site, "unlike renewable energy" (sic) or natural gas plants.

FERC said that while it had not used the term “resilience,”  it had pursued policies that would “ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity in the face of fuel disruptions or extreme weather threats.”

China: Regions with Rich Geothermal Resources to Replace Coal Heating "as Soon as Possible"

China will boost shallow geothermal energy heating in smog-prone Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and nearby regions, the state planner said in a statement on Monday, in a bid to curb coal use during winter as part of Beijing's fight against air pollution

Geothermal energy contained in terrain and waters less than 200 metres underground, with temperatures below 25 Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), is encouraged to power heating systems in buildings

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) asked regions with rich geothermal resources to replace coal heating "as soon as possible"

Some budgetary fund from central financial authorities will be allocated to support construction of geothermal projects

The NDRC has also asked local authorities to open the urban heating market and encourage private capital to invest in geothermal projects.

Indonesia: Geothermal Energy Supplies 5% of Nation's Renewable Electricity

Renewable energy production exceeds 2017 target (Jakarta Post)

The Indonesia Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has announced that, as of December 2017, renewable energy contributed to 12.62 percent of the total national electricity supply, exceeding the 2017 state budget target of 11.96 percent.

“The energy mostly comes from hydropower plants and geothermal energy plants,” ministry spokesman Agung Pribadi said as reported by tribunnews.com on Monday.

He added that hydropower plants contributed to 7.27 percent of the renewable energy produced, followed by geothermal power plants at 5 percent and other sources at 0.25 percent.

Meanwhile, as of November 2017, geothermal power plants produced 11.560 GWh, while other renewable energy resources produced 579 GWh.

USA: Deadline for Geothermal Energy-Powered Desalination Project is Today

SBIR/STTR Funding Opportunity: Forward Osmosis Desalination

Letter of intent is due by 5:00 PM Eastern on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. 

The Energy Department’s Geothermal Technologies Office seeks to partner with a small business to commercialize a novel desalination process - Forward Osmosis (FO) - driven by low-enthalpy geothermal heat. This Technology Transfer funding opportunity encourages small businesses to propose a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) project that leverages this desalination technology that has been developed at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

Researchers at INL have developed a process that harnesses natural osmotic forces to extract freshwater from wastewater in a forward osmosis (SPS FO) process.

This award-winning INL technology could be utilized in applications where minimization of wastewater volumes or zero liquid discharge is important, and where the concentration of water sources containing economically valuable materials is targeted. While the target application for commercialization is flexible, the low grade heat must come from a geothermal source.

A mandatory letter of intent is due by 5:00 PM Eastern on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018.

Geothermal Energy Association Joins the Geothermal Resources Council

Geothermal Resources Council and Geothermal Energy Association Members Overwhelmingly Vote for Unification (News Release)

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) and the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA) are excited to announce their unification. Combining the GRC and GEA strengthens the voice of our industry with a single organization devoted to advancing the science, education, and development of renewable geothermal energy resources.

Members of both organizations voted on the decision to unify and the results were overwhelmingly in favor. They will benefit from an increased value for their dues and improved networking relationships as the geothermal community moves forward together.

The activities of the GEA will be transitioned into the GRC in early 2018. One of the key activities is already underway through the establishment of a special committee, the GRC Policy Committee. This committee will focus on educating and lobbying leaders at state and federal levels to expand their knowledge about the geothermal industry. The committee will also assist the geothermal community in its awareness of opportunities to expand renewable energy projects, building a stronger platform for the entire U.S. energy grid. All members are encouraged to join in this new effort.

"Together, the now unified GRC and GEA can advance the geothermal community in more ways to connect with the larger energy industry and create a clean environment for future generations to enjoy," stated Maria Richards, President of the GRC Board of Directors.

Doug Glaspey, President of the Board of Directors for the GEA said, "The members of GEA look forward to working within a single organization to advocate for and advance sound geothermal law and policy that will expand our industry. The unification of our two organizations will allow us to pursue this mission in the most efficient manner possible."

The GRC will continue as a non-profit, 501(c)3 corporation serving as the professional educational association for the international geothermal community, as a focal point for continuing professional development through outreach, information transfer and education services.

The GRC's Policy Committee will file an annual 501 (h) election, which allows them to conduct legislative and regulatory advocacy. An additional membership fee to join the Policy Committee will raise the funds for their activities. This provides the GRC with a mechanism to keep their primary members’ dues and funding completely separate.

The headquarters for the unified organization will be in Davis, California and operate under the name “Geothermal Resources Council” until further discussion of a possible name change is completed.

Canada: Recognition for Valemount Geothermal Project

We’ve gathered a list of some of the projects we want to fist-bump this year. We’re not suggesting they’re perfect; any large extractive project comes with an environmental cost. But these are projects that rise above the rest in their efforts to minimize that cost.

Valemount, B.C’s Geothermal Project

The town of Valemount, B.C., is sitting on an endless supply of heat and power — and it’s in the final stages of doing something about it. The town has been working on a plan for years that would allow it to first develop a hot spring, then develop a community geothermal plant to meet the town’s existing energy needs and, eventually, use that energy and heat for other uses as well, like heating a greenhouse, brewing beer or melting ice on the streets.

“It has the potential for being a really ticketable showcase to show the world what can be done with geothermal,” owner of the local Three Ranges brewery Michael Lewis told DeSmog Canada in 2016.

So far, the project’s proponent, Borealis Geopower, has secured rights to develop geothermal in Valemount but has yet to receive drilling permits. Exploratory drilling is the next step Borealis will take to identify just how hot the geothermal potential is beneath the town. But if Valemount’s local hot spots are any indication, there’s likely a wealth of clean, sustainable and cheap energy just below the surface.

I had the pleasure of attending the 41st Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) Annual Meeting recently to give a presentation "Global Value Chain and Manufacturing Analysis on Geothermal Power Plant Turbines," which highlighted Clean Energy Manufacturing Analysis Center (CEMAC)'s analysis work in this area. Little did I know, the GRC would later announce that my presentation was among the winners for best technical presentation!

To understand more about the opportunities to improve and expand the geothermal power market, CEMAC developed a manufacturing analysis methodology of geothermal power plant turbines including materials, manufacturing equipment, machining process and cost model.

USA: Federal Report Estimates Additional 1,610 MW of Geothermal Energy in Next Two Years

Renewable Energy Shines, Coal Dims In New Federal Report (Clean Technica)

The update reports 3.80 GW of geothermal steam in the USA or 0.32% of total capacity.  Also included is an estimate of another 1,610 MW of proposed geothermal steam energy capacity from an additional 32 units by December 2020. 


The latest Energy Infrastructure Update from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), issued on January 3 for November 2017, covers generation units with a capacity of 1 megawatts (MW) or more. It’s packed full of good news for natural gas and renewables, but not for coal.

Within the next three years (by December 2020), FERC anticipates the retirement of 74 coal power generation units with an installed capacity of 20,650 MW.

The update reports 3.80 GW of geothermal steam in the USA or 0.32% of total capacity.  Also included is an estimate of another 1,610 MW of proposed geothermal steam energy capacity from an additional 32 units by December 2020.

The World Bank has just issued a Request for Expressions of Interest for resistivity surveys and a development of a conceptual model for two geothermal sites in Fiji. 

The World Bank invites expressions of interest from qualified consulting firms to undertake a Resistivity Survey in the Labasa and Savusavu areas of Vanua Levu, Republic of Fiji.

Qualified consulting firms are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to undertake a resistivity survey in the Labasa (Part 1) and Savusavu (Part 2) areas of Vanua Levu, Republic of Fiji. The objective of the assignment is to conduct further investigations into geothermal energy resources with a view to identifying drilling targets for exploration well(s) leading to a pilot project for development.

Canada: GRC Student Member Wins for Geothermal Energy Infographic

Indonesia is really hot: A look at untapped potential (UBC)

Would it surprise you to know that Indonesia, the world’s 4th most populous country, possesses one-third of the total estimated geothermal energy in the world?

Despite its abundance, the country only uses 6% of this energy source, which converts the Earth’s underground heat energy into electricity. When I discovered this, I teamed up with my friend Sang to try to figure out the root causes, existing solutions, and opportunities available in resolving this missed opportunity.

Through the University of Oxford’s Map the System challenge, we created an infographic and accompanying written analysis [published in the September/October GRC Bulletin - see reference below], and presented our findings. Our team wound up in 3rd place at the Canadian finals in Calgary, won $500, met a host of inspiring students dedicated to pursuing global issues, and became eligible to apply for up to $10,000 of funding for more in-depth field research on this issue.

USA, California: Golden State a Leader in Renewable Energy

California Ahead of Renewable Energy Goals, data shows (CEC)

California’s leadership role in advancing the use and availability of renewable energy continues as evidenced by results of a California Energy Commission report which estimates that 30 percent of the state’s electric energy currently comes from renewable energy sources.

The state’s progress with renewables is also evidenced by data from the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) which shows renewable energy penetration of as much as 40 percent.

At the Cerro Pabellón geothermal plant in the Atacama Desert, we’ve installed a system that integrates photovoltaic generation with a hybrid energy storage system based on a lithium ion battery and hydrogen storage. This allows us to provide clean energy to the plant’s base camp 24/7.

Cerro Pabellón, the first geothermal plant in all of Latin America, has added a smart grid connected to a renewable plant and to an energy storage system that provides constant electricity to the small village of Ollagüe and, since January 2017, also a hybrid system that integrates a solar plant with a lithium ion battery and hydrogen storage.

Philippines: World Bank Could Help Leyte Geothermal Power Plants Recover from Earthquake

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private lending arm of  the World Bank, is considering extending a loan of $90 million to Energy Development Corporation (EDC), an integrated geothermal steam and electric power producer in the Philippines.

The loan would help with capital expenditures including the balance of work related to the recovery of service of the geothermal power plants in Leyte that were affected by the July 2017 earthquake, according to IFC’s disclosure.

Some of the proceeds will go towards supporting the company’s capital requirement and other corporate purposes for existing geothermal operations in 2018.

Commonwealth of Dominica: European Union Provides Funds for Geothermal Energy Development

EU rehabilitation assistance for Dominica (St. Lucia News Online)

The European Union has provided Dominica with 3.52 million euros (EC$11.34M) as part of continued assistance towards rehabilitation of the country.

The assistance is part of a total 8.9 million euro (EC$28.5M) programme to rebuild the country’s water infrastructure and also to push towards geothermal energy production.

The EU is assisting the government in establishing a legal framework for the development of geothermal energy and technology. A unit will also be set up to promote geothermal investments, ensure the efficient use of the geothermal resources, and to monitor all safety issues relating to the operation of geothermal plants.

USA, California: Yesterday, Geothermal Energy Was the Number One Renewable in the Golden State

Geothermal Energy Tops Wind and Solar in California

After a very dry November and December the rains have returned to refresh the Golden State. Cloudy conditions with occasional showers are the forecast across California. It is mild with very little wind.

This poor weather affects electricity generation especially wind and solar. When the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine these renewable energy providers suffer.


The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) measures the output from renewable energy providers to the State grid. As you can see in the graphs above there was enough sun to energize solar panels for just 10 hours and the wind decreased in intensity during the day. The weather wasn't cooperating for the variable renewables. 

However, geothermal energy was still plugging away, supplying a constant supply of clean, dependable, renewable energy 24/7, 365 days a year.

In fact, yesterday in California, geothermal energy was the biggest provider of electricity from renewable resources to the CAISO grid, with almost 22,800 MWh. Winds produced 5,159 MWh, solar energy (PV and thermal) peaked around midday and only supplied 21,640 MWh.

Geothermal energy was the number one renewable energy provider - and this is not the only day when it supports the economy here in California. You can depend on it!

France: Innovative Well Completed at Cachan Geothermal District Heating Project

On December 13th, 2017, the first subhorizontal geothermal well, designed and supervised by GPC Instrumentation Process (GPC IP), has been completed on the Paris suburban Cachan site for its customer Dalkia (EDF Group).

The well architecture is a world premiere in geothermal engineering as it achieves a 1,001 meter long, 87° slanted, 8"1/2 openhole drain in the Dogger/Bathonian, Mid Jurassic, oolithic limestone, target reservoir, at a 1,550 m true vertical depth.

The concept, first published in February 2011(1)  at the Stanford Geothermal Engineering Workshop, proved rewarding, further to well tests, evidencing a 450 m3/hr nominal discharge and a 16 MWth rated capacity.

This well will be further replicated by an injection well of similar architecture.
The new doublet, managed by a Dalkia/City of Cachan JV (Dalkia operator) will replace two, 34 year old, existing geothermal district heating doublets.

Since the late 19th century, Boise’s geothermal energy has been an economic and cultural driver of the city’s development. Entrepreneurs capitalized on the region’s active geologic inheritance to provide Boiseans with cheap, sustainable energy long before the environmental movement of the 1970s popularized the “green energy” concept.

In 1890 and 1891, the Boise Water Works Company pioneered the municipal-scale use of geothermal water when it completed two geothermal wells along the east Boise Front, which brought geothermally heated water to the surface. The Boise Water Works Company later consolidated with another local water company to form the Boise Artesian and Hot and Cold Water Company.

The geothermal water, naturally emerging from the ground at approximately 165-170 degrees Fahrenheit, provided heat for residences along the area’s Warm Springs Avenue and for downtown businesses. It also provided hot water for Boise’s iconic indoor spa – the Natatorium. This geothermal corridor eventually became known as the Boise Warm Springs Water district and is the oldest continuously utilized geothermal system in the United States.

  • Analyze performance of production and injection wells, diagnose problems, plan remedial action, and assist with permitting and execution of the work.
  • Evaluate performance of production and injection wells and identify problems and opportunities for improvements.

Turkey: Greenhouse Heated by 80°C Geothermal Resource Begins Operations

Afyon Project Completed (News Release)

Timfog Engineering Company has completed the heating system of Aldosan Greenhouse in Afyon province. Geothermal water sources up to 80°C degrees have been used for the system. Heating system of the greenhouse in which Alfa Laval exchangers from Sweden and Grundfos pumps from Germany are used, has been successfully activated.

Aldosan Greenhouse will continue to invest in greenhouse cultivation in the oncoming years. To that end, it has been discussed how to rehabilitate the different geothermal water sources located in the area.

USA, Wyoming: New Explanation for Newberry and Yellowstone Geothermal Heat

There's a new theory for how the Yellowstone National Park supervolcano gets its hotspot (Billings Gazette)

Newly published research contradicts what has been a long-held — although fervently debated — theory about the hotspot underlying the Yellowstone supervolcano.

Geologists at the University of Illinois used seismic waves that travel through the earth after earthquakes and explosions to produce an almost X-ray-like view of what’s going on underground. The information was then fed through a supercomputer to mimic different geologic scenarios that are known to have occurred over the past 20 million years in an attempt to come up with an explanation for the Yellowstone hotspot.

Their conclusion? Yellowstone’s heat is being funneled east from the geologically active Pacific Coast.

Italy: Exergy Expands Geothermal Generator Business in Turkey

Exergy Expands Made-In-Turkey Components for Power Plant Equipment to Provide Additional Economic Benefits to Turkish Clients (News Release)

Italian ORC company Exergy will supply the first 12 MVA power plant generator Made-in-Turkey for a new 10 MWe geothermal project recently signed with Kiper Elektrik Üretim A.Ş., part of Kipaş Holding group. This plant, exploiting a geothermal resource at 125°C, consists of a water cooled ORC unit with two pressure-level cycles expanded on a single disk Radial Outflow Turbine and will become operational by the end of 2018.

The Made-in-Turkey generator, together with the other Turkish components, will qualify Kiper for additional incentives on the feed-in-tariff bringing an increase of up to 19% in revenues, reducing the payback period for the plant investment.

Science & Technology: Modeling the Link Between Water Reinjection and Seismic Activity

Modeling the Effects of Wastewater Injection (California Institute of Technology)

Earth scientists develop a model to estimate the largest possible quake in a given location that could be caused by the disposal of water used in hydraulic fracturing

Previous attempts to model the relationship between injection of wastewater and the triggering of earthquakes suggested that the maximum magnitude of the seismic activity induced in this way would be proportional to the volume of the fluids injected.

However, this interpretation fails to account for the fact that earthquakes can grow beyond the area impacted by fluid pressure, says Jean Paul Ampuero, professor of seismology at Caltech and co-author of a new study on the topic that appears in the journal Science Advances on December 20.
