Geothermal Leaps Forward With Partnership, $3.8 Million Grant (Pagosa Springs Sun)

Pagosa Springs (Courtesy Pagosa Springs Tourism)
The burgeoning geothermal industry in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, took a significant step forward this week, with the final signature placed on an agreement that officially creates a public-private partnership to further explore geothermal resources in Archuleta County.

More specifically, the agreement, which was approved unanimously by Archuleta County Tuesday, Jan. 14, creates a water authority between the Town of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County.

A 1980 study suggested that there is 200 degree water at two thousand feet down, but at that time geothermal power generation technology required 300+ degree water.

GRC member Jerry Smith of Pagosa Verde, LLC is one of the champions who have been actively advancing geothermal research in the Pagosa Springs area. Smith said that geothermal heat technology has improved greatly over the years—in fact; in 2007, 165 degree water was successfully used to make power.

State’s First Utility-Scale Geothermal Plant Heats Up (Albuquerque Business First)

The Cyrq Energy Lightning Dock Geothermal Plant opened Wednesday

New Mexico’s first geothermal plant doesn’t look like a power plant.

Really, it’s just a bunch of pipes sticking out of the ground, a few giant fans and some radiators. But it will produce enough electricity to power 4,000 to 5,000 homes, using the heat that comes out of the desert.

The new plant is the beginning for what Cyrq Energy CEO Nick Goodman hopes to see in New Mexico. The Cyrq Energy Lightning Dock Geothermal Plant in Animas opened Wednesday. It’s the first utility-scale geothermal plant in New Mexico, officials said. The $100 million investment will, Goodman said, hopefully pave the way for more geothermal generation in the state.

Commercial Geothermal Plant Touted (Albuquerque Journal )

The landscape around the Lightning Dock
Geothermal Project (Courtesy Cryq Energy)
A hot water resource tapped first for growing roses, then for raising fish, is now supplying New Mexico’s first commercial-scale geothermal electricity.

Cyrq Energy Inc. has turned the key on its $43 million geothermal power plant Lightning Dock. Chief Executive Nick Goodman, Gov. Susana Martinez and electricity provider Public Service Company of New Mexico are touting the project today as a way to diversify the state’s renewable energy resources.

“Renewable energy has its issues, like fossil fuels, but geothermal overcomes a lot of the challenges,” Goodman said. Unlike wind and solar, a geothermal plant can supply energy nonstop.

Cyrq pumps hot water from 1,200 feet to 3,000 feet below ground at estimated flow rates of 2,200 gallons per minute, pulls it to the desert surface to heat a secondary fluid, which in turn spins turbines to generate electricity. The company re-injects the somewhat cooled geothermal water back into the ground nearby. The water never sees the light of day and, Goodman says, it is not spent or wasted.

Cyrq launched production December 24 and is generating about 4 MWe.

Monthly Generator Capacity Factor Data Now Available by Fuel and Technology (EIA)

Geothermal Energy has a steady, high capacity, the best of all renewable energies

Capacity factors are an important measure of electric generator usage. They describe how intensively a fleet of generators is run. A capacity factor near 100% means a fleet is operating nearly all of the time. It is the ratio of a fleet's actual generation to its maximum potential generation.

In December 2013, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) began publishing tables of monthly capacity factors for 16 different fossil and non-fossil fuel and technology combinations in the Electric Power Monthly.

EIA's new tables include capacity factors for individual renewable generating technologies (see chart below). Geothermal and waste technologies operate fairly steadily and at high capacity factors. Intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind tend to have lower capacity factors, as their output varies with the availability of the sun and wind on both a daily and seasonal basis. Solar generators—particularly solar thermal—operate at a minimum during winter months, while the U.S. wind fleet on average has a period of low production during the late summer. Hydroelectric generators show both seasonal and annual variations reflecting changing levels of precipitation, river flow, and snowmelt.

Akutan Volcano's Geothermal Energy Potential Higher than Previously Thought (Alaska Dispatch)

Burke Mees/Alaska Volcano Observatory photo
The geothermal energy venting from hot springs and a fumarole field at Akutan Volcano is much better than previously estimated, according to a new study that could boost a Southwest Alaska village’s plans to power homes and the continent’s largest seafood plant with the earth’s natural warmth.

The U.S. Geological Survey in 2012 measured 29 megawatts of heat steaming from a series of hot springs near sea level near Akutan, a fishing-based island community.

Converted into electricity, the heat could produce several megawatts of electricity to power the village’s 44 homes as well as other buildings, including the Trident Seafood processing plant where 1,100 employees turn 3 million pounds of fish daily into goodies like frozen pollock fillets.

Geochemical Investigation of the Hydrothermal System on Akutan Island, Alaska, July 2012 (USGS)

A new Scientific Investigations Report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) points to a substantial geothermal energy resource on the Aleutian island.

Rig & Lupines: Hot Springs Bay Valley, Akutan, Alaska, by Amanda Kolker (2010)

Abstract: We have studied the geochemistry of the hot springs on Akutan Island in detail for the first time since the early 1980s. Springs in four discrete groups (A-D) along Hot Springs Creek showed generally higher temperatures and substantially higher Na, Ca, and Cl concentrations than previously reported, and total hot-spring discharge has also increased markedly. The springs now account for a heat output of ~29 MW, about an order of magnitude more than in 1981.

Gas samples from the hot springs and from a fumarolic area on the flank of Akutan Volcano show high 3He/4He ratios (>6.4 RA) after correction for air contamination and reveal a common magmatic heat source. Hot-spring gases are unusually rich in N2, Ar, and CH4, suggesting that the water has boiled and lost CO2 during upflow beneath the flank fumarole field.

Gas geothermometry calculations applied to the flank fumarole field implies temperatures of 200–240 °C for the reservoir, and Na-K-Ca geothermometry implies temperatures near 180 °C for the outflow waters that feed the hot springs. The results of our study confirm the existence of a substantial geothermal resource on the island.

Europe, Opinion:

'Significant Barriers' to Geothermal Power Must be Overcome (TheParliament.com)

With the right legislation, geothermal technology could make an important contribution to Europe's energy mix, says Vittorio Prodi.

In an environment of high and unstable energy prices, geothermal power offers a cost-effective, renewable and alternative energy option with multiple advantages. As it relies on harvesting the continuous heat flux coming from Earth, – which represents 25 billion times the world's annual energy consumption – it is an almost unlimited source of energy.

It is also the only source of renewable energy capable of driving consistent and reliable electricity generation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It is flexible and can provide base load electricity, thus complementing various other renewables while providing broad market opportunities. It could displace oil, gas and electricity, thus reducing our external energy dependency and increasing security of supply.

Last but not least, the integrated generation of heating and power has been shown to have a significant positive effect on job creation.

New Sonoma Utility Promises Cleaner, Cheaper Power - Mostly Geothermal (San Francisco Chronicle)

For years, a devoted band of San Francisco officials has tried, and failed, to create a public power agency that would supply renewable electricity to the city's residents.

Marin County pioneered the idea in 2010, buying clean energy on behalf of local homes and businesses. And now Sonoma County appears poised to take the same step.

On Thursday, the governing board of Sonoma's new public power agency plans to set rates for its electricity service, which will begin in May. Most customers will save money, compared to what they currently pay Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

Following Marin's lead, Sonoma Clean Power will give customers two choices. The agency's basic service, CleanStart, will save customers 2.3 percent on their electricity bills, compared with PG&E. And its mix of power sources will have 30 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions than PG&E's, Syphers said.

A second level of service, called EverGreen, will provide 100 percent renewable power, most of it drawn from the Geysers geothermal field. But it will come at a premium, raising a customer's electricity bill roughly 20 percent.

Call for Blanket Permit for Large Scale Geothermal Energy Development on Salton Sea (Imperial Valley Press)

The extent of the geothermal resource on the
Salton Sea along with estimated generation of 2330 MWe.
An interesting footnote to the story "Imperial Irrigation District Considers Salton Sea Regeneration Plan Powered by Geothermal Energy" we ran on January 6, are comments by Gary Saleba, president of EES Consulting, the firm that conducted the study.

The report Salton Sea Revenue Potential Study says that renewable energy development at the Salton Sea could generate up to $4 billion in revenue over 30 years, with $2 billion going toward restoration.

Geothermal development alone could generate as much as $2 million over the study period, with mineral recovery bringing in a potential $1.5 billion.

The report assumes a geothermal energy potential of 2,000 megawatts. Estimates of royalties from mineral recovery projects are based on $2.4 million per year for a 50-megawatt geothermal plant.

However, the market prices are currently too low to justify geothermal development at the Salton Sea.

“Geothermal developers would be at the Salton Sea right now if they could afford it,” said Gary Saleba, president of EES Consulting, the firm that conducted the study. In addition to energy transmission capabilities, state grant funds may be needed to spur geothermal development, Saleba said.

A blanket commitment for geothermal development may be needed to cut through red tape.“It would be unfortunate if all 15 to 20 (geothermal projects) would have to go through a separate permitting process,” Saleba said. “Some kind of a blanket permit for a cookie-cutter type of geothermal project down here would be something which would expedite things.”

Imperial Irrigation District Considers Salton Sea Regeneration Plan Powered by Geothermal Energy (mydesert.com)

A new study from the Imperial Irrigation District projects that geothermal, solar and other green technology development at the Salton Sea could generate more than $4 billion over the next 30 years, with 50 percent or more to be used for the receding sea’s restoration.

The bulk of the money, around $2 billion, would come from geothermal plants at the sea pumping out about 2,000 MWe of power. Another $1.5 billion would come from lithium and other minerals extracted from geothermal brine.

The report goes to the IID Board of Directors on Tuesday, but while its findings may seem impressive at first, they come with significant caveats. Unanswered questions in the study include whether the state would require utilities to buy geothermal power from the Salton Sea.
