PannErgy Geothermal Projects Receive €18 Million Loan (Budapest Business Journal)
Hungary-based geothermal energy company PannErgy announced yesterday that two of its units withdrew a total of €18 mln in loans from the Hungarian Export-Import Bank to finance a project near Győr in northwestern Hungary.
PannErgy began drilling thermal wells in Pér located on the outskirts of the city of Győr, in June. The heat generated from the wells is expected to supply the city of Győr as well as German car manufacturer Audi's nearby plant. PannErgy was awarded a €1 bln European Union and state grant for the project.

Indonesia Seeks Investment to Triple Geothermal Energy Within Five Years (The Jakarta Post)
After hydro power, geothermal is slated to make the biggest contribution in the renewable energy expansion plan for Indonesia. Under the plan, geothermal power plants’ installed capacity is projected to increase nearly three-fold by 2019, to 4,926.5 MW from the current output of 1,403.5 MW, according to figures from the renewable energy directorate general.
Due to its geographic position atop the “Ring of Fire”, the country sits astride abundant geothermal resources. However, the government has struggled to grow the sector as projects have stalled due to conservation area issues.
Funding is also a challenge, as geothermal plants require high injections of capital and are high-risk, discouraging financial institutions from approving loans. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s director general for renewable energy, Rida Mulyana has called on geothermal developers to redouble efforts and to dedicate time and resources to compiling data and statistics to bolster confidence.
“For instance, Supreme Energy initially did explorations on its own. [The company] got the data and power-selling agreement and then they got a funding deal with the ADB [Asian Development Bank],” Rida said.
Supreme Energy recently obtained $50 million from the ADB to fund exploration activities. In geothermal development, exploration is seen as high-risk, as it requires huge amounts of investment with no guarantee that the drilling site will provide enough steam for the development of a plant.

What Plummeting Oil Prices Mean for Renewable Energy (The Guardian)
Historically, lower fossil fuel prices have impacted renewable energy resources like kryptonite – for example in the 1980s and 1990s, when nascent solar, wind and geothermal markets in California keeled over as North America suddenly became awash in cheap oil and natural gas.
But energy markets dynamics have changed in the 21st century. In fact, when it comes to electricity, oil and renewables hardly mix at all anymore.

GRC Board of Directors Member Patrick Hanson, the Global Marketing Director for Scientific Drilling International
If you had unlimited funding to promote geothermal, what would you do?
I would fund and organize a consortium of leading geothermal companies’ independent from any association and fund a high-end geothermal education campaign. This could include targeted commercials, advertisements, speaking campaigns, and general outreach efforts that would touch a broader audience than traditional methods. Each consortium member could participate, provide direction, or sponsor by committing a dollar amount to the “fund”. How this is organized is a whole different story.

Quest for Power Loses Steam (Daily Nation)
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s pledge to Kenyans for a 50 per cent reduction in the cost of electricity by next year may not materialize after the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) said it will not be able to add 105 megawatts to the national grid by the end of the year.
A work plan by the company for the Menengai Independent Power Producers project outlines the steps the government must take, beginning with commissioning and drilling, to inject 105 MW into the national grid by the end of December.
According to company, the setback is due to tendering delays, but insiders attribute it to the absence of steam.
The geothermal company had in May picked three firms: Quantum Power, OrPower 4 and Sosian Energy to generate 107 MW where Geothermal Development Company would supply steam while investors built power plants.

Village Leader Learns More on Direct-Use Geothermal (The Rocky Mountain Goat)
Got a business idea that some extra heat could help with? A CanGEA trade mission to Klamath Falls, Oregon, joining a GRC Fieldtrip from the GRC Annual Meeting in Portland, showed people the potential for the direct-use of geothermal heat that can be used in small and large scale businesses.
Silvio Gislimberti, Valemount’s Economic Development Officer, took part in the trade mission in early October. He says the situation is a little different for Klamath Falls than Valemount because they are situated on an old volcanic crater, and near-boiling water is accessible at depths as shallow as 100 meters. It is easy to find in Klamath Falls, and we still have to find it here in Valemount, and it will likely be deeper. Still, Gislimberti says he is excited about what he learned on the mission. He can’t comment any further yet, until he makes his presentation to Council at the Nov. 25th meeting.

Mexican President Peña Promulgates Regulations to the Secondary Laws of the Energy Reform (Lexology)
Pursuant to the transitory articles of the Secondary Laws to Mexico's Energy Reform, enacted on August 11, 2014, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has announced the issuance of a series of clarifying Regulations, with an effective date of October 31, 2014 (the "Regulations").
The Regulations provide a clear framework for the authority that has been granted to different Mexican governmental agencies and a preview of the contracting process that will be unfolding over the next several years. Significant aspects of the regulations with regards to renewable energy and geothermal in particular:
Regulation of the Electricity Law (Reglamento de la Ley de la Industria Electrica) restructures the industry, and it enables and encourages private parties to participate in the market, sets the ground rules for a wholesale electric market, and addresses permitting for power generation projects. As part of a separate package, the Mexican government also issued the final criteria for regulating the Clean Energy Certificates described in the Electricity Law.
Regulation of the CFE Law (Reglamento de la Ley de la Comisión Federal de Electricidad) establishes internal governance rules for the Mexican Federal Energy Commission ("CFE"), together with CFE contracting procedures. This Regulation includes specific information on the eventual transition from CFE's current vertically integrated monopoly into a market that features private participation.
Regulation of the Geothermal Energy Law (Reglamento de la Ley de Energia Geotermica) specifies the manner in which private parties may develop geothermal energy resources in Mexico.

Mt. Baker Could be Source of Geothermal Power (MyNorthwest.com)
In the Pacific Northwest, the land of cheap hydro-electric power, a hidden source of renewable energy might get a new look. The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is asking for public comment on the idea of allowing geothermal exploration and development on federal lands.
Geothermal power is providing electricity for millions of people in California and Nevada. Now, the Forest Service will consider offering leases in the area of Mount Baker in Washington state.
The Forest Service is driven by a desire to increase American energy self-sufficiency as outlined in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
Public comment is allowed until December 1. Then, an environmental assessment will lead to a lease decision next spring, followed by a more site-specific analysis, if approved. Then, more public comment. But actual construction of a geothermal plant could take eight years, or more.

According to Alison Thompson, Chair of the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA), there is more than enough geothermal energy to power the province’s grid, yet none of these sites have been developed. Geothermal energy has never been invited to bid on calls for power. In fact, there isn’t a single developed geothermal site in all of Canada!

The Newberry Volcano Enhanced Geothermal Project: The Most Important Power Plant In The Country? (Forbes)
Right now, a project in the forests of central Oregon may hold the promise to unlocking an enormous new energy resource in the United States.
On the Newberry Volcano, AltaRock Energy is engaged in a project to mine the earth’s heat two miles down and turn it into a reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity.
The potential of this energy resource is huge, and it is not confined to a particular geography. The main thing one needs is hot rock at a reasonable depth. And there is a lot of that in this country – over 3,000 years worth at our current rate of energy use.

DEEP Geothermal Project is a Natural Fit in Estevan Area (Estevan Mercury)
The DEEP Geothermal project in Saskatchewan should be easier to sell in Estevan and Calgary than Toronto’s Bay Street. At least that’s the assumption the project’s promoter is making as she finds herself embedded in the second phase of an exciting electrical production program near Estevan.
Kirsten Marcia, a graduate of Estevan Comprehensive School, who holds degrees in geological engineering, sees the Deep Earth Energy Production (DEEP) project as one that local and Calgary-based oil patch and other production people should be able to understand and quickly embrace as doable. It would probably take a little longer to explain the intricacies to the Bay Street crowd who might not “get it,” as quickly as the oil patch teams do, she suggested.
“The best geothermal source in Canada is right here in southeast Saskatchewan. We have a supportive government behind the project. We will be providing base load electrical power into the nearby grid system, and it’s being done in an already explored area, so there are no surprises, no regulatory hurdles because it’s environmentally friendly."

Opinion: Geothermal Industry: It’s Time to Make a Strong Move (Herald and News)
Good news about geothermal energy is good news for Klamath and Lake counties, both of which use the earth’s natural heat to produce electricity and warmth.
An October 24 McClatchy News Service article in the Herald and News said that the geothermal industry is waking up to its own potential and is pursuing a much stronger future. It lags far behind solar and wind power as alternative power sources.
That could benefit Klamath and Lake counties who have long histories in using geothermal heat.
In addition, Oregon Institute of Technology has an active Geo-Heat Center, a Renewable Energy Center and a program aimed at meeting almost all of its own power needs through on-site geothermal wells and a solar array. That would make the Klamath Falls school the first in the nation to be able to make that claim.
The school’s research and scientific expertise is a natural fit for the region’s geothermal resources. In addition to the history, there’s also been recent drilling with good results in the Olene Gap area southeast of Klamath Falls and elsewhere.

The Salton Sea: A Deserted Seascape that Could Come Back to Life with Geothermal Technology (Greener Ideal)
Back in the 1950s, the Salton Sea area was a happening tourist area. This California tourist hotspot drew thousands of visitors, developers and businesses who thought to take advantage of this paradise surrounded by the desert; one that was created by accident. However, a few years later, it was found that the salt content resulted in serious health issues, and this put surrounding communities in dire straits.
For more than 30 years, the area has been little more than a ghost town. But that may change soon; as there may be geothermal alternative investments coming soon to this area.

BC Approves Site C Dam; Still No Geothermal (The Rocky Mountain Goat)
The $7.9 billion project would flood about 5,550 hectares of land along 83 km of the Peace River, creating a reservoir of about 9,330 hectares. BC Hydro expects it to provide 1,100 megawatts of capacity and produce about 5,100 gigawatt hours of electricity each year, enough to power about 450,000 homes per year.
A Joint Review Panel’s report had concluded that a failure to research into BC’s geothermal resources over the last 30 years has left BC Hydro without information about the resource “that BC Hydro thinks may offer up to 700 megawatts of firm, economic power with low environmental costs.”
When asked for further information about the analysis of geothermal, David Conway, Community Relations Manager for BC Hydro’s Site C project responded that no geothermal electricity projects have bid into any of BC Hydro’s clean power calls to date, despite being eligible. He says BC Hydro believes the high risk and associated high cost of exploring and confirming geothermal resources have kept independent power producers from advancing the industry, and that geothermal can’t be counted on to provide energy and capacity in the timeframe required by BC Hydro.
But the panel has also said that BC Hydro has not demonstrated the need for this project on the timetable it has set out.

Black Pine Woven Wheel Turbocompressor Wins Cleantech Open Prize For Noncondensable Gas Removal (CleanTechnica)
Black Pine Engineering has already bundled the Woven Wheel technology into a noncondensable gas removal turbocompressor. The Woven Wheel technology solves the problem of wasted steam in geothermal power plants. The wheel mechanically pumps the NCG out of power plant systems. All of the steam from the earth can then go through the turbine and generate power: none of it is wasted by escaping through the system.
At least three cleantech competitions have tagged Black Pine Woven Wheel accelerated technology as an energy-efficient turbocompressor that promises to be useful in multiple markets. The invention has won DOE’s Clean Energy Trust Challenge, the Michigan Collegiate Innovation Prize, and now the award for breakthrough technology from the Midwest Cleantech Open.

California ISO, PacifiCorp Launch First Western Energy Market (Businesswire - News Release)
The California Independent System Operator Corporation (CAISO) and Portland-based PacifiCorp announced today that the Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) went live on November 1. The real-time market is the first of its kind in the West.
The real-time market that covers six western states - California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming - culminates work that began in fall 2012 when the Western Interstate Energy Board’s PUC-EIM Group (composed of utility commissioners from 12 states) asked interested western entities to provide a proposal for a real-time imbalance market.
In February 2013, the ISO and PacifiCorp announced plans to jointly develop an EIM using the ISO’s proven state-of-the-art technology and market platform. After running EIM for a month under non-binding conditions, the market became financially binding on November 1.
Renewable integration is another significant benefit of EIM. Wind, solar, geothermal power and other renewable energy resources generated in one state can now be scheduled to meet consumer demand in another. Regional coordination can unlock more efficiency in dispatching renewable resources, can help reduce potential overgeneration of mid-day solar production, and assist states in meeting their renewable energy goals.

Geothermal Source Found for Pilgrim Hot Springs (KNOM)
It’s a project three years, and several wells, in the making. Now, flow testing results from the Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) indicate that Pilgrim Hot Springs is a viable source of geothermal power — at least on site.
The springs, located 37 miles outside of Nome, have been poked and prodded since last October, as engineers search for the ever elusive “upflow zone”: An optimal combination of high temperatures and water volume needed to produce 2 megawatts of electricity.
Gwen Holdmann, director of ACEP, said the results from a flow test conducted in September at the spring “exceeded expectations.”
Besides confirming a viable power source for the immediate surroundings, the latest data also points to another important piece of the puzzle: The hot springs’ source.

He said such areas need to be explored through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement to enable the country produce 200 MW from geothermal by 2020. “As government, we want to effectively utilize all potential sources of power available in the country and geo-thermal is one of them.

IRENA Opens Council Meeting Amid Global Calls for Expanding Renewable Energy (StreetInsider.com)
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) gathered representatives from over 90 countries in Abu Dhabi to review and recommend actions to scale-up renewable energy around the world. The two-day meeting opened on the heels of the release of the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which recommended the decarbonisation of the world's energy mix by 2100.
"Any solution to address climate change requires a massive scale-up in renewable energy," said IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin. "And as momentum builds around the climate issue, so does the focus on renewable energy - because not only can renewable energy combined with energy efficiency keep the global climate to a two degree temperature rise, it can do so affordably."

Ormat Signs Geothermal Power Agreement with Kenya Utility (Electric Light & Power)
Ormat Technologies’ majority owned Kenyan unit owned by Ormat (51 percent), Symbion Power LLC (24.5 percent) and Civicon Ltd. (24.5 percent), have signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with Kenya Power and Lighting (KPLC) and a Project Implementation and Steam Supply Agreement with Geothermal Development Company (GDC) for the 35 MW Menengai geothermal project in Kenya.
Under the agreement, the Project Co. will finance, design, construct, install, operate and maintain the Menengai steam plant on a build-own-operate basis for 25 years.
GDC, which is wholly owned by the government of Kenya, will develop the geothermal resource, supply the steam for conversion to electricity and maintain the geothermal field through the term of the agreement. Under the PPA, KPLC will purchase all the energy generated by the project.
The Menengai project is expected to benefit from the partial risk guarantee arrangement to be provided by the African Development Bank. Moreover, this project is part of the Power Africa initiative promoted by the U.S. government. The initiative was launched by President Obama in June 2013 to increase access to power in sub-Saharan Africa. The Project Co. expects to start construction upon financial closing.

Climate Change is Real, Humans are Mostly to Blame, Time is Short, UN Panel Says (Associated Press)
Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday.
The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC)'s giant climate assessment offered no surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three reports released in the past 13 months.
• Download and read the IPCC report here
• NOAA: 2014 warmest year on record so far
But it underlined the scope of the climate challenge in stark terms. Emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, may need to drop to zero by the end of this century for the world to have a decent chance of keeping the temperature rise below a level that many consider dangerous.
