The geothermal power plant at Oregon Institute of Technology |
An October 24 McClatchy News Service article in the Herald and News said that the geothermal industry is waking up to its own potential and is pursuing a much stronger future. It lags far behind solar and wind power as alternative power sources.
That could benefit Klamath and Lake counties who have long histories in using geothermal heat.
In addition, Oregon Institute of Technology has an active Geo-Heat Center, a Renewable Energy Center and a program aimed at meeting almost all of its own power needs through on-site geothermal wells and a solar array. That would make the Klamath Falls school the first in the nation to be able to make that claim.
The school’s research and scientific expertise is a natural fit for the region’s geothermal resources. In addition to the history, there’s also been recent drilling with good results in the Olene Gap area southeast of Klamath Falls and elsewhere.
