New Zealand Company Secures Contracts to Build Two Geothermal Power Projects in Indonesia (Scoop Media)
Auckland based Hawkins Group, New Zealand’s largest privately owned infrastructure and construction business, has announced they will be involved in developing the Lumut Balai and Karaha geothermal power stations in Indonesia. The two plants, owned by state-owned Pertamina Geothermal Energy, will be built by Hawkins in a joint venture with Indonesian partner Banguan Cipta Kontractor (BCK).
Lumut Balai is located in South West Sumatra on a remote site some 1300m above sea level. Hawkins has been appointed to design, procure and construct the civil and building services work to the power plant plus the installation of all Toshiba supplied power plant equipment. The contract also includes the commission of all above ground steamfield activities. The project period is 24 months from January 2015.
The Karaha power plant, is located in West Java, 1200m above sea level and is also a design, procurement and construction services contract to house the Alstom supplied power plant equipment as well as commissioning all above ground steamfield activities. The project will last around 23 months from January 2015.
Hawkins has experience in delivering geothermal projects in New Zealand having successfully completed the Kawerau Geothermal Power Station, Ngatamariki Steamfield and Nga Awa Purua Geothermal Power Station.

NZ Geothermal Minerals Laws Clarified (Asian Correspondent)
A new report by a leading natural resources legal expert aims to clear up issues around the ownership of minerals found in geothermal fluids.
Professor Barry Barton from the University of Waikato’s Te Piringa – Faculty of Law and director of the Centre for Environmental, Resources and Energy Law, has completed his research into the issue and the report is the culmination of his role in a two year, $400,000 project with GNS Science: From Waste to Wealth: Commercial Recovery of Products from Geothermal Fluids.
Professor Barton’s role was to establish the legal framework around the ownership of the minerals found in geothermal fluids. He says his research was an “effort to put a bit of clarity to an interesting piece of New Zealand law”.
He found that under the Resource Management Act, those with water rights also had rights to minerals in the water, but the issue got more complicated if the Crown Minerals Act was involved.
It came down to a statutory interpretation of the word ‘mining’ and whether the removal of minerals from geothermal fluids could be considered mining.
GNS Science will be holding a stakeholder workshop in July 2015 for interested parties to discuss the content of these reports and future opportunities for recovery of minerals from geothermal fluids. AER has greatly reduced its overhead, project carrying costs and long term liabilities while increasing its cash position through the sale of project assets. As at December 31, 2014, the company’s assets consist primarily of cash and cash equivalents of US$2.2 million.
Alternative Earth Resources has sold or optioned three of its four geothermal development projects in the U.S. for cash, thereby reducing project carrying costs to zero. At the Pumpernickel project, which was not included in the sale, AER has terminated its private leases and kept its two BLM leases. The company has recently plugged and abandoned the existing thermal gradient wells at Pumpernickel in order to discontinue its interest and recover its geothermal well bonds. Well liabilities are expected to be extinguished and the company expects to recover certain well bonds in California and Nevada by March 31, 2015.
Going forward, AER is evaluating advanced stage mineral projects for potential acquisition.

Geothermal Industry Reaches Out to Out-of-Work Oil Drillers (Corporate Knights)
The job losses related to $55-a-barrel oil could be as high as 23,000 this year as Alberta’s oil patch adjusts to new market realities.
That was the recent warning from the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which predicted that the number of active drilling rigs in service will fall to an average of 203 a day in 2015 from 370 a day last year – a 41 per cent drop.
“If there are not as many drilling rigs working, there will not be as many rig workers on the job,” said association president Mark Scholz. “This will have significant adverse effects on indirect employment throughout the economy, well beyond just rig workers.”
That’s bad news for Alberta – and bad news for the country more broadly – but a silver lining is in there somewhere, at least as far as Canada’s nascent geothermal industry is concerned.
Next Monday, the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) will be holding a technology transfer workshop aimed directly at oil and gas contractors looking for ways to adapt their technologies and approaches to geothermal development.
The event will be held at the Calgary Petroleum Club, and while it was planned before the oil-price collapse, CanGEA chair Alison Thompson said the timing is fortuitous.
“These drilling rig operators are selling their services right now at half the price,” said Thompson. “So this is a prime opportunity for us to be more cost-competitive, but to also get out-of-work people back to work.”

New power-generating units at Kenya’s Olkaria I plant are saving East Africa’s biggest economy about 2.2 billion shillings ($24 million) a month on fuel costs, according to the country’s biggest electricity producer.
A fourth and fifth unit at Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited’s Olkaria I geothermal plant, which each started providing 70 megawatts of capacity in October and December, are reducing reliance on fuel used in hydropower generation, Chief Executive Officer Albert Mugo told reporters Monday in the capital, Nairobi. The facilities will be inaugurated on Feb. 19, he said.
The fuel-cost component associated with hydropower generation “has fallen to a low of 2.51 shillings per kilowatt-hour by this February, which represents a drop of 65 percent,” he said.

The real test [in recovering from natural disasters like Typhoon Yolanda] comes not in the willingness to donate money because that is the easiest part. But the company must accept that it is confronted with a situation where it must use its own human and intellectual resources in order to bring assistance to an environment where there is often a lack of social, physical and communications infrastructure. Business firms and non-governmental organizations need a model, or at the very least, a case study on how to practice real CSR in Yolanda-type of situations.
It is for this reason that I would recommend the story of Energy Development Corp. (EDC) and its relief and rehabilitation efforts in Leyte as the model for companies who desire to practice pro-active Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) whenever there is another natural calamity.
EDC is a Filipino company which is one of the world’s largest producers of geothermal energy. Its largest geothermal plant is located in Leyte. It is a pioneer in the renewable energy sector. The company has also become a multinational with investments in geothermal operations in Chile, Indonesia and Peru.

We don’t need a volcanic landscape to tap the heat in the earth, and the Government has already commissioned reports that have found enough resource in Scotland to heat the whole country using Geothermal energy, as the Times reported last year. When faced with pollution of our communities and a hastening of the climate catastrophe that threatens extinction within decades, why on Earth are we NOT chasing the sustainable wealth in Geothermal Energy?
We could use the heat for heating, but also to power turbines, potentially generating 10s-100s MWe, possibly even GWe of baseload power. That would mean that geothermal energy could equal that of wind power, meeting our entire electricity demand. Geothermal energy has the additional advantage of supporting baseload independent of season and weather changes throughout the year.

Mexico:
Mexico's Reform to Boost Geothermal Potential (Business News Americas)
Mexico's geothermal production potential is greater than what was forecast by state utility CFE and the energy ministry (Sener), according to an executive at global energy firm Reykjavik Geothermal.
Mexico's geothermal development has been slow in the past because it is a capital intensive energy source and the CFE has not been able to allocate funds to the sector, but this will change with the energy reform, strategy and project financing director Chris McCormick said at an energy forum in Mexico City.
The high cost of geothermal development will continue to slow the sector's growth, but public-private partnerships (PPPs) will inject the much needed capital, he said.
The reform gives priority to the PPP over the independent power producer (IPP) model, even though IPPs can mean a more efficient deployment of capital, McCormick said.
Sener will launch the geothermal 'round zero' during the current quarter to determine which projects will be developed by the CFE and which ones will be tendered to the private sector.

Mexico's geothermal production potential is greater than what was forecast by state utility CFE and the energy ministry (Sener), according to an executive at global energy firm Reykjavik Geothermal.
Mexico's geothermal development has been slow in the past because it is a capital intensive energy source and the CFE has not been able to allocate funds to the sector, but this will change with the energy reform, strategy and project financing director Chris McCormick said at an energy forum in Mexico City.
The high cost of geothermal development will continue to slow the sector's growth, but public-private partnerships (PPPs) will inject the much needed capital, he said.
The reform gives priority to the PPP over the independent power producer (IPP) model, even though IPPs can mean a more efficient deployment of capital, McCormick said.
Sener will launch the geothermal 'round zero' during the current quarter to determine which projects will be developed by the CFE and which ones will be tendered to the private sector.

Kenya’s Cost Of Electricity Drops By A Third As Geothermal Goes Live (AFKInsider)
Kenya’s cost of electricity for both business and domestic users has dropped by a third since December as geothermal power producers joined the national grid, reducing reliance on rain-fed and diesel generators, the country’s main power producer KenGen said on Monday.
Data provided by KenGen showed that geothermal power accounted for 51 per cent of electricity bought by households and businesses in December, up from 14 per cent in the same month in 2013.

Auction Date for 4 Geothermal Power Projects Set (SeeNews)

Turkey Eyes 1 GW of Geothermal as Part of New Clean Energy Strategy (PV-Tech)
Turkey is targeting 1 GW (1,000 MW) of installed Geothermal power by 2023 as part of a new strategy on renewable energy deployment developed with Deloitte and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has brought its plans in line with the EU Renewable Energy Directive. It has pledged to have renewables represent 30% of its installed capacity by 2023. This goal has been segmented by technology type with 34 GW of hydro, 20 GW of wind, 5 GW of solar and 1 GW each of geothermal and biomass.

The initial phase of its assessment will cover a 30-week period, Grenada’s government said, beginning with reviews that first began in December.

University of Wisconsin geoscientists and engineers are working with industry partners and the U.S. Department of Energy to integrate several data-gathering approaches into a highly detailed monitoring system for geothermal wells.
A team has converged on Brady Hot Springs in Nevada with a combination of satellite imaging techniques and fiber-optic cable. The researchers have turned this relatively small geothermal field into a proving ground for a system that ideally can be scaled up in wider and deeper fields.
The project’s scope spans from fundamental geoscience to maximizing the production of electricity from geothermal wells. Geoscience Professor Kurt Feigl says there’s still a great deal to be learned about fractures and deformation in rocks. This information will in turn help DOE and industry partners Silixa and Ormat Technologies follow the hot water through a complex underground landscape—and pursue the long-term goal of commercializing EGS more broadly.
The information will also help industry develop enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), man-made geothermal wells created by injecting additional fluid into naturally heated rock areas that are not already saturated with fluid. This process opens up existing fractures in the rock, allowing the water to circulate through the area and transport the geothermal heat so that it can be converted into electricity.

Tanzania:
Tanzania to Reverse VAT On Renewable Energy Technologies (AllAfrica)
The Tanzanian government has in principle agreed to reverse its decision to remove all Value Added Tax (VAT) exemptions on renewable energy technologies thanks to lobbying and advocacy by members of the Tanzania Renewable Energy Associations (TAREA).
Speaking at a workshop towards universal access in Tanzania stakeholder consultation, the TAREA Executive Secretary, Mr Matthew Matimbwi, said that when the government last year announced that renewable technologies like solar, wind and geothermal would be taxed, it was a huge disincentive.
"Since November last year until the end of the parliament session that ended last weekend, we have been engaging the authorities and they have now agreed to reverse their decisions, this is a clear indication of the value renewable energy is currently being given," he said.

Calpine Corporation, today reported fourth quarter 2014 Adjusted EBITDA of $345 million, compared to $399 million in the prior year period, and Adjusted Free Cash Flow of $95 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, compared to $126 million, or $0.29 per diluted share, in the prior year period.
The company reported that it has 15 plants at The Geysers generating 725 MW of geothermal baseload energy. The Geysers provided approximately 5,837,000 MWh of renewable baseload generation in 2014 compared with 6,002,000 MWh in 2013.
In the accompanying Q4 2014 Earnings Presentation Calpine stated the need for flexibility in supplying electricity from its geothermal power plants to the California market. In December last year the California Energy Commission (CEC) approved an agreement with Calpine subsidiary Geysers Power Company LLC (The Geysers) for a $3,000,000 grant to investigate the methods, risks and costs associated with flexibly operating the Geysers geothermal plants to facilitate the integration of other intermittent renewable resources onto the grid in support of California's energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Comparing the Costs of Renewable and Conventional Energy Sources (Energy Innovation)
You can’t get too far in a discussion about the nation’s electric power sector without running into the question of costs. How do renewable sources, such as solar and wind, stack up against fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas? How much will it cost utilities and ratepayers to build—and operate—a new power plant?
Onshore wind has the lowest average levelized cost in this analysis at $59 per megawatt-hour, and geothermal power plants showing well at the top end of the list. By comparison, the lowest cost conventional technologies were gas combined cycle technologies, averaging $74 per megawatt-hour, and coal plants, averaging $109. These numbers are the average of Lazard’s low- and high-end estimates (see their study for more about their cost calculations).

AltaRock Energy of Seattle hopes to drill a production well this summer into the volcano south of Bend, completing an Engineered Geothermal System (EGS), said Dave Stowe, a spokesman for the company. The project uses advanced techniques and technology to create geothermal steam from underground hot rock. The steam could serve as a power source.
The meeting is set for 6 p.m. March 2 at the Brooks Room in the Downtown Bend Public Library, Stowe said.

2014 JRC Geothermal Energy Status Report - Joint Research Center of the European Commission
This is the first edition of an annual report with which the Institute for Energy and Transport contributes to the general knowledge about the geothermal energy sector, its technology and economics with a focus on the European Union.
Due to the limited size of hydrothermal resources, the market share of geothermal power in Europe is small (0.2 %). Large scale deployment of geothermal power production requires the demonstration of successful EGS projects extracting heat from reservoirs constituting a variety of geological conditions.
An adequate management of deep engineered reservoirs and highly efficient thermal transfer from the rocks has to be demonstrated. The drilling technology to reach these reservoirs has to become cheaper. Then, the geological risk associated with each project will minimize, the EGS capital and operation expenditure will decrease and possibilities to enter new areas expand.

New Zealand based energy and logistics company Eastland Group Ltd has pulled the plug on a potential $10 million investment in a project to build a geothermal power plant in Hawaii. More than two years after the idea was first mooted, Eastland Group chief executive Matt Todd yesterday confirmed the company decided last month not to take the process any further.
Eastland Group’s investment in building a 25 MW plant on Hawaii’s Big Island would have been as a 20 percent partner, costing $5m-$10m, with Innovations Development Group (IDG) and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
Eastland Group subsidiary Eastland Generation already runs a 8.5 MW geothermal plant near Kawerau. The decision to pull out of the Hawaii deal will not affect plans for a second power plant at Kawerau, or the company’s relationship with IDG, said Mr Todd. Last year the company received consent for Eastland Generation’s Te Ahi O Maui geothermal project to go ahead, with plans to build a 15 MW to 20 MW plant.
“Eastland Group believes the future of geothermal energy is promising, and we continue to investigate geothermal investment opportunities. Electricity demand has flattened over the past few years but there are strong signs that demand is now increasing on the back of positive economic growth in New Zealand. New generation will be required to meet this increased demand as well as to replace ageing, expensive and polluting thermal plant.”

Alstom has been awarded a contract worth over €61 million by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy to supply and install a 30 MW geothermal plant for the Karaha Power Plant in West Java, Indonesia. Alstom will design, supply, install and commission the entire power plant (EPC3 contract). The project will be delivered by the end of 2016.

The proposals include historic benchmarks for pollution reduction, energy efficiency, and petroleum use that will spur innovation and investment and maintain California’s lead in creating jobs in the advanced energy sector. This will be the first series of bills introduced by Senate Democrats to combat climate change and preserve the environment.
SB 350 (De León-Leno) executes on Governor Jerry Brown’s bold vision mentioned in this year’s State of the State to reduce petroleum use by 50%, have 50% of electricity come renewable sources, and increase energy efficiency in all existing buildings by 50% — all by the year 2030.
Fifteen years ago, California enacted the nation’s first law requiring energy companies to buy 20% of their power from renewable sources. Prior to this mandate, renewable energy comprised less than 8% of the overall electrical mix in the state. Within 5 years of implementation, most energy companies were close to, or had purchased under contract, enough power to meet or exceed 20% RPS.
In 2011, Governor Brown signed legislation to increase RPS to 33% by the year 2020 [SB 2-1X chapter 1 Statutes of 2011]. Currently, most energy utilities have bought or have built enough energy resources to meet the 33% RPS before the target year. Also, according to numerous studies, California’s RPS standard has created hundreds of thousands of new jobs, millions of new investment and tax dollars, and significant clean air and climate benefits.
This legislation increases the RPS to 50% by the year 2030.

It would thus be appropriate to continue the reform of Law 443 on the Exploration and Exploitation of Geothermal Resources, and conduct geophysical surveys. These would identify new areas with low enthalpy and assess the possible direct uses of geothermal energy by industry and tourism.

Now the researcher, Sandra Ósk Snæbjörnsdóttir, a doctoral student at the University of Iceland, was looking for signs that the CO2 had combined with elements in the basalt and become calcite, a solid crystalline mineral.
In short, she wanted to see if the gas had turned to stone.
