How do Geysers Erupt Over and Over? (Scientific American)
Yellowstone National Park's Old Faithful mystifies and delights tourists with its recurrent eruptions. But because of its popularity, it is heavily protected: the government limits access to curious scientists and restricts experiments on its plumbing.
At least 80 smaller but equally percussive geysers also burst forth in Chile's Atacama Desert, offering an analogous opportunity to probe the earth's inner workings. Geologists laden with temperature and pressure sensors, GoPro cameras and a host of other gadgets recently observed one such geyser, nicknamed El Jefe, over the course of five days and more than 3,500 eruptions—one every 132 seconds. The result? The most detailed data set yet on the explosive choreography between water and steam.

GRC Workshop to Yellowstone National Park:
Old Faithful Geyser Mapping Begins Tomorrow (Yellowstone Insider)
A scientific crew utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) will begin Old Faithful Geyser mapping tomorrow in Yellowstone National Park, scanning shallow subsurface structures like the thickness of the hot spring deposits, fractures, vents and cavities.
The radar usage is described as being similar to a commonplace ultrasound. The work begins tomorrow in Yellowstone National Park and runs through April 13.
The visualizations gained from this project will be used to create a diagram of the shallow subsurface in the Old Faithful mound and Split Cone areas for the general public. Images gathered during this study may be used in an upcoming National Geographic magazine article on Yellowstone National Park. Scientific, peer-review articles will be written discussing the technique and results including the location and depth of subsurface cavities and vents, their orientation, dimensions and connectivity, the depth of any local groundwater, and the vertical and lateral extent of any imaged shallow steam zones.
The researchers includes Dr. Duncan Foley, Pacific Lutheran University who will lead a GRC Workshop to Yellowstone National Park from June 22-26.

When it comes to geological features and ecosystems, it’s hard to imagine anywhere else in the world more comparable to Yellowstone National Park
Even without the wildlife attractions, the winter landscape of Yellowstone is extraordinarily beautiful and unique. Popular locations include Mammoth Hot Springs for its steaming geothermal terraces, and the Upper Geyser Basin, famous for Old Faithful and other geysers.
There is hardly a visitor who doesn’t want to come home with an image of Old Faithful erupting. Fortunately, the regularity of its eruptions and the duration of its spouts make it a relatively easy subject for the camera.

The True Colors of Yellowstone Geothermal Pools (Geographical)
Yellowstone National Park is home to some astounding geothermal pools. These colorful natural phenomena occur due to interaction between underwater hot vents and bacteria that grow in lawns across the pools.
Seventy years ago the geothermal pools of Yellowstone tended to have a uniformly deep blue color. Temperatures were higher because there were fewer tourists at the site. Over the years, coins, trash and rocks tossed into the pool have covered the natural vents. This has lowered temperatures in the pool and caused them to turn to an orange-yellow-green color.
‘When we started studying [the pools], it was clear we were just doing it for fun,’ says Michael Vollmer from Montana State University. The initial research may have been light-hearted, but the team soon discovered there was very little existing scientific literature on the subject.

Geothermal Resources Council Announces Yellowstone Workshop (News Release)
The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is proud to announce another GRC Workshop. This year’s workshop will include a fieldtrip of the major geologic features of Yellowstone Park, the first national park in the world and the site of the greatest concentration of geothermal features on the planet, and discussions of its volcanic history, geochemistry, and hydrology.
The trip will be led by Duncan Foley, Gene Suemnicht, and Joe Moore. Duncan Foley has led geologic and photographic tours of the park since the 1970’s and is familiar with its features, moods and history. Gene Suemnicht and Joe Moore each have more than 30 years experience in geothermal systems worldwide.
In addition to Yellowstone National Park the trip will visit the 13 MW net capacity U.S. Geothermal Raft River geothermal power plant and the Raft River Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) site where reservoir stimulation activities are being conducted.
In the National Park workshop attendees will see at first hand the geological and geothermal features of the Yellowstone super volcanic system including 300 plus geysers – more than half of all the geysers in the world and more than 10,000 thermal features comprised of brilliantly colored hot springs, bubbling mudpots, and steaming fumaroles.

The trip will be led by Duncan Foley, Gene Suemnicht, and Joe Moore. Duncan Foley has led geologic and photographic tours of the park since the 1970’s and is familiar with its features, moods and history. Gene Suemnicht and Joe Moore each have more than 30 years experience in geothermal systems worldwide.
In addition to Yellowstone National Park the trip will visit the 13 MW net capacity U.S. Geothermal Raft River geothermal power plant and the Raft River Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) site where reservoir stimulation activities are being conducted.
In the National Park workshop attendees will see at first hand the geological and geothermal features of the Yellowstone super volcanic system including 300 plus geysers – more than half of all the geysers in the world and more than 10,000 thermal features comprised of brilliantly colored hot springs, bubbling mudpots, and steaming fumaroles.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) has announced more details of events at the world’s largest annual geothermal conference at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, Oregon, USA.
In addition to the main event of the GRC Annual Meeting & GEA Geothermal Energy Expo taking place September 28-October 1, 2014, there will be two workshops and three field trips before the conference and one field trip just after.

The purpose of the event is to introduce and connect public and private sector representatives from both Turkish and U.S. geothermal sectors. International Geothermal Workshop Announced by GRC
The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) will hold a two-day geothermal workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 2-3 June, 2014.
The GRC Workshop titled Geothermal Drilling, Well Testing, Reservoir Monitoring And Management, is being held just before the 2nd Indonesia International Geothermal Conference and Exhibition (IIGCE) on 4-6 June.
Three GRC members have been chosen to present: Bill Rickard, President, Geothermal Resource Group, Paul von Hirtz, President Thermochem, Inc., and Subir Sanyal, Senior Advisor, GeothermEx Inc.
The workshop will provide practical information to anyone interested in geothermal energy, including developers, financiers, utilities, regulators, public-interest organizations, and members of the academic community.
IIGCE 2014 is held in conjunction with the 14th Annual Scientific Convention of the Indonesian Geothermal Association (INAGA). It represents a golden opportunity for attendees to network with colleagues and potential business partners from around the world, as well as showcasing the geothermal industry in Indonesia.
The conference consists of plenary sessions, technical paper presentations and scientific exchanges. On the final day of the conference there will be a field trip to the 200 MW Pertamina Geothermal Operation in Kamojang.
