USA, Hawaii:

County Moves Forward with Geothermal Health Study (West Hawaii Today)

Hawaii County issued a request for proposals (RFP) Wednesday for a study on the health impacts of geothermal development. The study could cost up to $750,000 and take up to three years to complete. Interested parties have until May 5 to submit their proposals.

The Windward Planning Commission approved use of the county’s geothermal asset fund for the study in September. A geothermal working group made a health study its top recommendation in a report issued to the county in 2013.

According to the RFP, the study will address whether residents living near Puna Geothermal Venture, the only geothermal power plant in the state, have increased health problems that could be associated with exposure to hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, heavy metals and excessive noise.
