Geothermal Tax Abatements Key for Nevada County Economy (Lahontan Valley News)

Geothermal energy has played a vital role in shaping Churchill County's life and economy for the better part of three decades.

Comptroller Alan Kalt said the lost revenue from tax abatements impacts the entire community.


Kalt pointed out several plants have been operating in Churchill County for 30-plus years and successful geothermal projects provide a number of resources to our community. For example, the county has invested geothermal rents and royalty money to benefit of the community, including the purchase of fire and road equipment.

“We've received money to purchase fire equipment that was donated by Ormat and used by one of the local fire departments when it was called out for a fire out at the Soda Lake project,” he said. “These additional resources are used to support the community to improve the quality of life that affects all the residents who enjoy our community.”
