A critical phase of developing a commercially viable geothermal well in the Olene area has been completed. Now, scientists with the project developer Klamath Basin Geopower will test the well’s water temperature and permeability.

“It’s been an incredible scientific success,” said Bill Honjas, Klamath Basin Geopower’s CEO of initial findings from the test hole drilled on private lands owned by Sydney Giacomini next to Crystal Springs Road.

Drilling began Nov. 10. At the time, Honjas said he expected the test well would go to a depth of 4,000 to 6,000 feet. He declined to disclose the depth of the test well for proprietary reasons.

Honjas said upcoming tests will determine if the site, O-1N, can be used as a production or injection well, or neither. In a report on the company website, he said the commercial potential of well O-1N “will be clear in about a week or so.”
