Japanese Oil Company Takes First Steps in Geothermal Energy (Asahi Shimbun)

Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., head-quartered in Tokyo, said Dec. 28 it will take part in a joint geothermal energy development study in Hokkaido and Akita Prefecture along with Idemitsu Kosan Co. and Inpex Corp.

The project will mark Mitsui Oil Exploration's first foray into geothermal energy, and the company said in a release that it is confident that its experience and know-how gained from its oil and gas projects can be applied to the geothermal business.

The study will be done in the Amemasudake area (Akaigawa and Sapporo, Hokkaido) and the Oyasu area (Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture).

Idemitsu and Inpex began the study in June 2011, and have already conducted geological, gravity and electromagnetic surveys. Mitsui Oil Exploration said as a participant, it will jointly conduct further survey and evaluation for geothermal development along with Idemitsu and Inpex.
