The town of Pagosa Springs, Colo., depends on geothermal resources for tourism as well as a source of renewable energy -- a recent study by Colorado School of Mines’ geophysics students will aid officials there in further developing the region’s geothermal industry.

GDC wells to boost power generation
The Geothermal Development Corporation has completed 6 wells in Menengai four of which have the capacity to produce 24 MWe.
According to GDC Managing Director Silas Simiyu , the corporation will be installing modular power plants before the end of the year to reduce the gestation period involved in geothermal power generation.

Deep geothermal development project announced in Granada, Spain (News Release)
EGS Energy of Penzance in Cornwall, England, has been working in recent months with the Spanish shallow geothermal company Bleninser SA who have just announced their 50% JV investment in Ciclo Binario SA for the development of a deep geothermal energy powered binary cycle plant.
The Ciclo Binario development will involve the investment of €30 million in a plant of 10 MWe generating electricity for several thousand homes. The plant will be located in the hills near Guadix in the northern part of the province of Granada. A test well has been drilled to 600m and conductivity tests carried out, yielding satisfactory results. The production and re-injection wells are planned to be of the order of 3,500m deep. The development will take place over the coming three years and the operating lifetime is estimated to be 30 years.

Electricity from geothermal in the Netherlands may be profitable in the future (Fresh Plaza)
It will take at least eight years before gaining electricity from geothermal sources will be profitable. This was reported by Victor van Heekeren of Platform Geothermie to a Dutch newspaper. "Electricity generated by geothermals, is still far too expensive, compared to electricity from coal and gas. But geothermals are a promising source for the future. Geothermals are endless, unlike oil and gas.
The largest obstacle is the cost. Drilling for geothermals is extremely expensive: 1000 Euro per metre. According to calculations by Energie Centrum Nederland (ECN) and KEMA one kilowatt-hour from geothermal sources costs almost 20 cents. This is four times as much as electricity generated by coal.
This price is also only obtainable if the residual heat can be used for heating houses, greenhouses or as an energy source for the industry. This can't be done everywhere in Holland. Nonetheless the ECN thinks that the price can be brought down in the long term to 5 to 10 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Auditors for Nevada Geothermal Power have doubts about whether the company can stay afloat, the Washington Times reported Thursday, citing an internal audit of the firm.
The company has racked up $98 million in net losses in the past several years, cannot produce enough cash from current operations after debt-service payments and carries significant debt, the audit said.
Nevada Geothermal Power will hold its annual shareholders meeting on July 24, which will touch on the structure of the firm’s debt regarding the Blue Mountain geothermal power project in Humboldt County, Nevada.

The report presents detailed forecasts for renewable energy generation including geothermal.

A lingering dispute over New Zealand's founding document could halt the government's plans to partially sell four energy companies.
New Zealand's indigenous Maori are claiming ownership of geothermal and water resources used by the energy companies under the 177-year old Treaty of Waitangi document, which promised Maori undisturbed possession of their properties including lands, forests and fisheries unless the tribes on sold these to the British Crown.
The claim is currently being assessed by the Waitangi Tribunal, which although it cannot give binding ruling, it’s decision would support any application for an injunction against the sale at the New Zealand High Court.
Richard Orzecki, New Zealand Maori Council deputy chair, said in his submission at the State Owned Enterprise consultation meeting that ownership and management of the resources needed to be sorted before the sale.
But the New Zealand government, which is relying on its plan to sell down its 100 per cent stake to 51 per cent in four energy companies, Meridian Energy, Genesis Energy, Solid Energy New Zealand and Mighty River Power, to raise $NZ6 billion ($4.5 billion) to get the New Zealand government accounts back to surplus, is not perturbed by the case.

Construction on Tacoma Community College's Harned Center For Health Careers Begins Monday (UniversityPlacePatch)
Harned Center construction starts with the building’s geothermal heating/cooling system. More than 100 geothermal wells will be dug in Parking Lot C. In addition, a large storm water vault will be installed in Parking Lot D, and connections to city water and other services will be installed.
150 geothermal wells, located in Parking Lot C and the campus central quad, will provide heating and cooling for the Harned Center. Well-drilling rigs will be in place at the geothermal dig locations for about four months.
Geothermal temperature control systems use the constant subterranean temperature to regulate the temperature of water. The water is then used to heat or cool the building.

Indonesia:
WWF Indonesia launched a report on Thursday which mapped out the country’s geothermal resources in a bid to promote the use of alternative energy sources.
The report, titled “Igniting the Ring of Fire: A Vision to Develop Indonesia’s Geothermal Power,” said Indonesia had the world’s biggest geothermal potential as the country sat on the world’s most active volcanic belt, the Ring of Fire, which frames the Pacific Ocean.
There could be up to 29 gigawatts of electricity produced if Indonesia was into tap all of its geothermal resources, the report said.
That is more than enough energy to fulfil the needs of two of Indonesia’s most populated islands, Java and Bali, where demand peaked in April at 20.1 gigawatts.

It’s no secret that geothermal is one of Nevada’s hottest natural resources, one that the University of Nevada, Reno is encouraging scientists to tap into by hosting the second year of the National Geothermal Academy. The academy is an eight-week intensive course that started in mid-June and will last until Aug. 10. Sixteen out of the 44 students are from other countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia and Kenya. Students take classes about geothermal geology, energy utilization, geophysics and geochemistry, power plant design, and environmental and business policy, among others.

The UK's nascent geothermal energy industry has today received a major boost after it emerged that one of the UK's largest energy companies is working on plans to develop five new deep geothermal heat and distribution systems.

Dr. Desikan Bharathan, a principal engineer with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been recognized with a GEA Honors Award by the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA).

Dominica’s Geothermal Energy Project has officially tested its third well in the Roseau Valley, seeing what officials are calling “excellent results.”
The well is located in the Wotten Waven area.
“It looks very strong so far,” said Will Osborne of the geothermal resource group. “The potential, I would guess, is about a couple of megawatts at least, but it’s only partially open. This is just a small diameter test, so for a smaller well, this is a very good result.”

Landsvirkjun today announced that it has signed a new power purchase agreement (PPA) with PCC BakkiSilicon hf, an Icelandic subsidiary of the Germany-based industry holding PCC SE. Under this new contract, Landsvirkjun will provide clean, renewable energy to power a metallurgical grade silicon metal production plant being built by PCC in Bakki near Husavik on Iceland's north coast. The 32,000 ton facility is scheduled to come online in late 2015 and will require 52 megawatts (MW) of power, or 456 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually, which will be derived from renewable sources such as geothermal and hydro.

VANCOUVER - Alterra Power (TSX:AXY) has received an offer for its 66.6 per cent interest in HS Orka, a geothermal power company in Iceland.
Alterra did not release financial terms on Friday of the non-binding deal, which requires the approval of the Icelandic government.

PEA goes geothermal (Seacoast Online)
There's something new going on underneath the grounds of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Forty-nine geothermal wells, each 400 feet deep and eight inches in diameter, are being installed under the Academy Building lawn as part of Phase 2 of the Phillips Hall renovation project. The installation of the wells began the day after graduation earlier this month.
Through a closed-loop pump system, the wells will provide heating and cooling to Phillips Hall, which currently doesn't have an air conditioning system.
"We looked at a number of alternative systems to bring cooling into Phillips Hall," said Roger Wakeman, director of facilities management at PEA.
After doing some research, Wakeman said, it was determined the geothermal wells would be about 30 percent more efficient in energy use then conventional heating and cooling, and the project would pay for itself in 12 to 13 years.

Portland airport terminal gets green kudos (The Sacramento Bee)
PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine's Portland International Jetport has become the nation's second commercial airport to receive LEED gold certification.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and its gold certification demonstrates that the airport was built to environmentally friendly, energy-efficient standards.
