Monday, May 13
USA, California: The Case for Geothermal Energy in a Diverse Portfolio of Renewable Sources - In addition to helping provide much needed balance to California’s renewable portfolio, geothermal can provide valuable grid reliability benefits, which mistakenly, are not considered by the Public Utilities Commission when implementing the renewable portfolio standard.

United Kingdom: Drilling of Injection Well Begins at United Downs Deep Geothermal Project- With £2.4 million from Cornwall Council and £5 million from private investors, Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL) is drilling two deep geothermal wells at its site within the United Downs Industrial Estate and will build a 1-3 MW pilot power plant to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of supplying both electricity and heat.

Philippines: EDC to Expand at Existing Geothermal Power Plants - Lopez-led Energy Development Corp. (EDC) said last week it would carry out “a small expansion” of its geothermal assets.

Finance: Report Suggests an Additional 100 GW Geothermal With Regulatory Reform- Moving towards centralized permitting and more pragmatic environmental reviews could lead to a 500% increase in geothermal capacity using existing technology and up to 100 gigawatts (GW) (an increase of 3700%) with new technology.

Croatia: 20 MW ORC Geothermal Power Plant to be Built in Slatina Region - The plant will use Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system to produce electricity, which will be delivered to the distribution network of HEP ODS, Croatia’s state power grid operator, reads the application for determining the need for an environmental impact assessment.

USA: Funding for Projects to Develop Downhole Tools to Enable Enhanced Geothermal Systems - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: Next Generation High-Temperature Optical Fibers – $800,000. Fervo Energy Company: Solve EGS: Surface Orbital Vibrator For Evaluation Of Enhanced Geothermal Systems – $1,180,000.

USA, Hawaii: Puna Geothermal Venture Slated for November 30 Start-Up - Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), with the help of Hawaii Electric Light (HELCO), is moving forward with plans to restart power production on the lower East Rift Zone after the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano.

Education: Deadline to Apply for $14,000 in Educational Awards is Next Week - Educational awards to be given to eight students in the international geothermal energy community. Applications must be received by May 24, 2019.

Switzerland: Vinzel Geothermal District Heating Project Gets Federal Grant - The medium-depth EnergeÔ geothermal project in Vinzel (a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland), has received help from the Swiss Confederation.

Science & Technology: New Book on Geothermal Well Test Analysis - Geothermal Well Test Analysis: Fundamentals, Applications and Advanced Techniques provides a comprehensive review of the geothermal pressure transient analysis methodology and its similarities and differences with petroleum and groundwater well test analysis.

Canada: Interview With Deep Earth Energy Production CEO on Estevan Geothermal Power Project - The federal Liberals announced $25.6-million in funding for a geothermal project in Saskatchewan this year. Kirsten Marcia, president and CEO of Deep Earth Energy Production, discusses how the company is using the financing.
