Monday, September 10

USA, California: Legislation Requires all Retail Electricity be Generated from Renewables by 2045 - Senate Bill 100 speeds up the state’s timeline for moving to renewable energy sources like solar and wind (and geothermal), and requires that all retail electricity be generated from renewables by 2045. California is the second state to adopt such a goal, after Hawaii.

Indonesia: Partnership Formed to Develop 10 MW Dieng Geothermal Power Plant - The state-owned geothermal company PT Geo Dipa Energi (Geo Dipa) is to collaborate with the state-owned financing company, PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI), to develop the Dieng Small Scale 10 MW Geothermal Power Plant.

Science & Technology: Bacteria that lives in Geothermal Zones Could Have Antibiotic Properties - Researchers in New Zealand recently applied ‘genome mining’, to a strain of Thermogemmatispora – a type of bacteria that lives in extreme conditions in the heated soil of New Zealand’s Taupo geothermal zone.

USA: Spending Bill Gives Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy a 2.5% Boost- The DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) which includes the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO), could see an increase in federal funding.

USA, New York: Seismic Survey to Begin at Cornell Enhanced Geothermal System Project- From Sept. 21-25, faculty and students from Cornell Engineering will be conducting geological characterization of rock formations under campus and adjacent land to establish baseline seismicity, as part of the university’s study of Earth Source Heat (ESH), a proposed enhanced geothermal system to heat the Ithaca campus.
