Research center using geothermal source for heating (Upper Michigans Source)
No gas? No problem for the Michigan Tech Keweenaw Research Center.
They have tapped into a unique water source that allows them to heat the building without a gas fired furnace. The system taps into water from an old mine that stays at a constant 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once the water is pumped to the surface, it travels through a heat exchanger that extracts the heat and sends the water right back to where it came from. From there, the heat warms up a refrigerant where it can either be compressed to create heat or expanded to cool areas off.
