Chile's geological institute Sernageomin has identified 14 interesting zones for geothermal energy projects in the southern region of Los Lagos, according to the results of a study presented last week.

The geothermal zones are located in the central valley and the main mountain range, along the border with Argentina. In the first region, there are low-temperature resources of between 16 and 23 degrees Centigrade at depths of up to 70 m (230 ft), along with an aquifer of 30-44 degrees Centigrade at a depth of 800 m in Los Muermos municipality. In the mountains, the institute detected temperatures of up to 250 degrees Centigrade and estimates several possible reservoirs. The most interesting systems there are the Antillanca-Casablanca volcanic complex, the Reloncavi stream and Huequi peninsula.
