Farming Lobster in Iceland Using Geothermal Energy (Undercurrent News)

With lobster remaining strong amid high market prices, European lobster could be one of the most promising potential aquaculture species, said researcher at University of Iceland Soffia K. Magnusdottir.

Based on this, the European Lobster Center of Excellence was established last year and, now, a project joining partners from Iceland, Denmark, Norway and UK aims to estimate the viability of land-based farming of European lobster using geothermal energy in Iceland.

The idea is something already used by some farmers in Iceland to farm Arctic char, Atlantic salmon and sole.

“So far 8% of geothermal energy is used for aquaculture, green houses and other industries. We would like to see this percentage increased,” Magnusdottir said.
