U.S. Senator Harry Reid and Acting Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairwoman Cheryl LaFleur are among those taking part in a ceremony today at an NV Energy power plant just north of Las Vegas.
The federal Energy Department lent more than $340 million in stimulus money for the project in 2011. It’s called the One Nevada Transmission Line, or ON Line (PDF), and is majority owned by an affiliate of LS Power.
The high-voltage transmission line stretches 231 miles from Moapa to just west of Ely. Officials say it links Nevada’s north and south power grids for the first time and can help boost the use of renewable energy.
