Monday, May 20
Japan: 46 MW Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plant Begins Commercial Operation - This plant has a capacity of 46,199 kW and generates electricity utilizing geothermal resources expected in Yuzawa city, Akita prefecture. We have seen no new operation of a large-scale geothermal power plant over 10,000 kW in these 23 years in Japan.

USA: $1,400,000 in Small Business Innovation Research Grants Involving Geothermal Energy - Nine EERE technology offices will fund 109 awards under 12 topics including two for the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) alone and another five under the joint topic of Advanced Manufacturing and Geothermal Technologies Offices.

USA, Hawaii: Ormat in Talks to Renegotiate PPA for Puna Geothermal Venture - Talks are ongoing with HELCO, and revolve around delinking the cost of power from the price of oil. During peak hours, the first 25 MW PGV sells to HELCO is tied to that cost.

United Kingdom: Injection Well Drilled to First Casing Point at United Downs Geothermal Power Project - After the drilling of UD-1, the production well, was completed to a depth of 5,275m, the 500 tonne rig was 'skid' across the site by 8m in order to be in position to drill UD-2, the injection well to a depth of 3000m!

USA, Nevada: Play Fairway Analysis Discovers New Geothermal Resources - Now that these blind geothermal systems have been discovered, it’s up to the geothermal industry to conduct additional drilling for possible development of a geothermal power plant.

Climate Change: World Is Falling Short of Sustainable Energy Goals - World Bank Report- In 2016, renewable electricity consumption increased by almost 8%. The share of renewables grew by 1 percentage point to reach 24%. This is the fastest percentage point growth since 1990 and more than double that of 2015.

Thursday, May 23
Education: Deadline Extended for Geothermal Scholarships - The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) has extended the application window for the 2019 GRC Scholarship Awards until May 31, 2019.

Indonesia: Five Geothermal Working Areas to be Auctioned in July - Including Laniea in Sulawesi with a capacity of 66 Megawatts (MW), Sembulan in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) with a capacity of 100 MW, Telaga Ranu in North Maluku with capacity 85 MW. Then, Kotamobagu in North Sulawesi has a capacity of 410 MW and Bora in Palu, Central Sulawesi with a capacity of 123 MW.

Philippines: "We Urge the Government to Incentivize the Development of Geothermal” - EDC President - Tantoco said geothermal is “the holy grail of renewable energy” being the cleanest, most reliable and readily available.

Netherlands: TU Delft to Work More With GFZ on Geothermal Energy Research - The agreement between GFZ and the TU Delft concerns a long-term strategic cooperation, among other things in the fields of geothermal energy, heat storage and further underground storage possibilities.
