George Grindley also played a major role in the exploration and development of geothermal energy in New Zealand, including the first hot water geothermal field to be developed for electricity production in the world, at Wairakei.

He recognised the importance of active faults in siting new drill holes. He also worked on geothermal development projects overseas, including in Mexico and the Philippines. Once, during field work near hot springs, he stepped into a boiling mud pool severely burning his leg. But such incidents did not deter him from further work in geothermal areas.
