Turkey: Nine Cities Will Benefit from Hi-Tech Greenhouse Development Due to their Geothermal Resources

In order to prevent high prices in fruits and vegetables and to increase productivity throughout the year, Turkey will launch hi-tech greenhouses. In the first stage, hi-tech greenhouses will be constructed in an area of 2 thousand hectares. Nine cities will benefit from the project due to their geothermal resources.

In terms of geothermal resources, Turkey is the leading country in Europe and ranks as 7th. in the world. Muslum Yanmaz, the president of Greenhouse Investors and Producers' Association said that, Sanliurfa, Izmir, Afyon, Usak, Kutahya, Denizli, Manisa, Aydin and Agri stand out as potential cities to construct hi-tech greenhouses.

Geothermal leader Energy Development Corp. urged the government to grant incentives to the development of geothermal energy to provide not only clean and reliable power but also jobs and livelihood to local communities.

“The Philippines has vast geothermal potential. To spur the development of this untapped geothermal potential, we urge the government to incentivize the development of geothermal,” EDC president Richard Tantoco said.

Tantoco said geothermal is “the holy grail of renewable energy” being the cleanest, most reliable and readily available. 

Iceland: Sale Transitions HS Orka into a Pure Play Renewable Energy Platform

Ancala buys stake in HS Orka alongside Icelandic pension funds (News Release)

London, UK-based Ancala Partners, an independent mid-market infrastructure investment manager, has agreed to acquire a 50% interest in HS Orka, Iceland’s largest private electricity generator, from Jarðvarmi, a consortium of 14 Icelandic pension funds. Ancala has made the investment on behalf of Ancala Infrastructure Fund II, Ancala’s second mid-market focused infrastructure fund.

The transaction follows Jarðvarmi’s exercise of its right of first refusal to acquire a 53.9% interest in HS Orka from Alterra Power Corp, a subsidiary of Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. Jarðvarmi has also agreed to acquire a 12.7% interest in HS Orka from Fagfjárfestasjóðurinn ORK. The remaining 33.4% in HS Orka was already owned by Jarðvarmi. Following the transactions Ancala and Jarðvarmi will each own 50% of HS Orka.

The price for the acquisition of Alterra’s 53.9% interest was USD 299.9 million. The price for the acquisition of Fagfjárfestasjóðurinn ORK’s 12.7% interest was not disclosed. Ancala’s acquisition from Jarðvarmi has been agreed on the same terms.

Ancala and Jarðvarmi have further agreed to divest HS Orka’s 30% interest in the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s leading tourist attraction, to Blávarmi. The sale transitions HS Orka into a pure play renewable energy platform.

In addition to exercises throughout the course, the participants will work in teams to create 2D and 3D temperature and reservoir models using geostatistical methods as capstone projects. United Kingdom: British Company Drills Recharge Borehole for Deep Geothermal Project

Weardale Geothermal Borehole - Case Study (Drilcorp)

Newcastle University had recently drilled a 1000 metre deep geothermal borehole which produced heated water from deep in the Weardale granite formation.

The new project was to drill a recharge borehole into the granite several hundred metres away. The proposed borehole was to be 400 metres deep penetrating approximately 100 metres into the granite formation.

A small spot core was also to be taken of the granite as this had never been seen in solid form. The strata to be penetrated above the granite consisted of a series of limestone, mudstone and whin sill layers, many of which were fractured, cavernous and particularly hard.

Taiwan: Energy Development Corporation Has Concession to Explore for Geothermal Energy Resources

Lopez-majority owned Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is targeting to expand geothermal investments in Taiwan, a top executive of the conglomerate has disclosed to the media.

At this stage, EDC Board Director Francis Giles B. Puno noted that what EDC has what is basically a “concession” for a geothermal service area for exploration, hence, the target is to ensure first that the prospects would eventually yield commercially-viable outcome.

Yet even prior to this targeted investment entry in Taiwan, Puno qualified that EDC is considerably a globally entrenched player in the geothermal sector – primarily in the provision of exploration and drilling services in key markets like Kenya and Japan.

Philippines: Aboitiz to Supply 10 MW Geothermal Power to Iloilo City

Power supply for residents and businesses in Iloilo City is secured after MORE Electric and Power Corporation (More Power) signed an interim power supply agreement with one of the country’s largest power producers, Aboitiz Power Corporation.

The signing last May 22 at Seda Atria Hotel Iloilo is even more significant as the power supply will come from a clean and renewable power plant of AboitizPower under the company’s Cleanergy brand. 

The contract for 10 MW, with an option to add 5 MW, was signed by officials of More Power, led by Roel Z. Castro, president and chief operating officer, and AboitizPower, represented by Alexander B. Coo, president and chief operating officer of AP Renewables, Inc. (APRI). The interim power supply will be for one year.

The energy will be supplied by APRI, which operates the Tiwi and MakBan geothermal power plants, located in Albay and the provinces of Laguna and Batangas, respectively.

For his part, Coo said AboitzPower’s portfolio of power plants all over the country makes it an ideal partner for More Power and the people of Iloilo City.

"Geothermal power is definitely unique because it is renewable energy yet it can be baseload – meaning, it delivers power 24/7. For a growing metropolis like Iloilo City, this makes perfect sense. We are definitely excited to be partners with More Power and even more excited to be part of the growth of Iloilo City,” he added.

More People Have Access to Electricity Than Ever Before, but World Is Falling Short of Sustainable Energy Goals (World Bank)

Despite significant progress in recent years, the world is falling short of meeting the global energy targets set in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030. Ensuring affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030 remains possible but will require more sustained efforts, particularly to reach some of the world’s poorest populations and to improve energy sustainability, according to a new report produced by the International Energy Agency (IEA) the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2016, renewable electricity consumption increased by almost 8%. The share of renewables grew by 1 percentage point to reach 24%. This is the fastest percentage point growth since 1990 and more than double that of 2015. Three
key developments drove this trend. First, Latin America continued to recover from a severe drought, with Brazil’s hydropower generation growing by 3.5% in 2016. Second, China had record-level wind capacity growth in 2015 that
became fully operational in 2016. Third, solar PV consumption grew by 30% as both China and the United States doubled additions between 2015 and 2016.

Hydropower remained the largest source of renewable electricity, accounting for 68% of all renewable electricity consumption in 2016. However, it played a much smaller role than in 2010 (down from 82%) due to the rapid increase of solar PV and wind generation, which grew ten- and threefold over the same period, respectively. This rapid growth was mainly driven by policy support around the world and recent cost reductions. Since 2010, generation costs of solar PV declined on average by 80% and onshore wind by 20%.

The shift from government-set tariffs (feed-in tariffs, premiums) to competitive renewable energy auctions with long-term power purchase agreements played an important role in accelerating the cost reductions. Auctions also helped governments contain renewable support costs through volume control mechanisms. Still, wind remained the second-largest source of renewable electricity, followed by bioenergy, solar, geothermal, and ocean technologies.

The winners will be announced at the GRC Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, California, USA.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is pleased to announce this year’s Amateur Photo Contest. The purpose of the contest is to showcase quality photography featuring geothermal energy around the world.

The winners will be announced at the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo being held in Palm Springs, California, USA from September 15-18.

The first place winner will receive $150, second place - $100, and third place - $75. Honorable Mention photos will receive certificates.

Photographs on any subject related to geothermal energy including geothermal energy production, EGS, direct use and geothermal heat pumps can be submitted. This includes photos in the areas of exploration, drilling, well testing, research and development, power plant construction, operation, and maintenance, geological features or geothermal manifestations.

For the 2019 photo contest, GRC is helping to raise awareness of the community benefits of geothermal energy through providing honorable mention awards for photos that help demonstrate two specific categories: Diversity - Celebrating inclusivity in the geothermal industry and Community - Providing positive interaction and impact on communities.

Education: Deadline to Apply for $14,000 in Educational Awards is Next Week

Total of $14,000 in educational awards to be given to eight students in the international geothermal energy community. Applications must be received by this Friday, May 31, 2019.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) reminds applicants of the impending deadline for the 2019 GRC Scholarship Awards.

To qualify for any of these awards a student must be a GRC member (student memberships are only $20 per year). Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual’s academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.

The following awards are available:
  • Five (5) Marcelo Lippmann Graduate Scholarship Awards of $2500 – to be eligible for one of these awards, the candidate must be enrolled in a graduate-level program at an accredited academic institution at the time of the award (Fall 2019). If selected, each recipient is required to submit a paper on his/her research (or research progress) to be published in the GRC Transactions and deliver results at the meeting as either a poster or oral presentation. If the recipient presents in the year of the award then the full $2500 is awarded at that time; if the recipient defers to present/publish the following year then $750 is withheld until the following year when the recipient presents.
  • Three (3) GRC Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of $500  – to be eligible for one of these awards, the candidate must be a third or fourth year undergraduate at an accredited academic institution at the time of the award (Fall 2019).

After the drilling of UD-1, the production well, was completed to a depth of 5,275m, the 500 tonne rig was 'skid' across the site by 8m in order to be in position to drill UD-2, the injection well to a depth of 3000m!

Monday 20th May - We have finished drilling to the first casing point of UD-2 at 809m. We are now preparing to run the 13 3/8" casing over the next couple of days and cement it into place, we will then be ready to start drilling the next section of the well. - The UDDGP team.

Kenya: New Substation to Supply Cheaper Geothermal Electricity to the Coast

Power blackouts in Coast region is likely to become history by October 2020 on completion of Mariakani substation in Kilifi County.

According to the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), the station currently under construction will enable increased supply to the Coast of cheap geothermal power from Olkaria fields in the Rift Valley alongside hydropower from neighbouring Ethiopia.

Supply of more geothermal and hydropower to the Coast is expected to steeply cut reliance on expensive diesel-generated electricity in the region. The expected overall impact is lower bills for consumers across the country since power tariffs on the national grid are harmonised regardless of location and energy source.

Geothermal power potential in Nevada is heating up – with two successful discoveries in the Great Basin by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology using a previously untried method for finding unknown, hidden geothermal resources.

Both discovered systems are blind – meaning there are no surface indications of hot water – and there had been no exploration previously in one of these areas and only minor previous exploration in the other. Geologists at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology at the University of Nevada, Reno, used a number of other surface and subsurface clues in their methodology developed as part of their Department of Energy funded Play Fairway project that has been underway since 2014.

Now that these blind geothermal systems have been discovered, it’s up to the geothermal industry to conduct additional drilling for possible development of a geothermal power plant.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to support the experimental investigation of the effects of fluid pressure pulses on the downhole mechanics of rock fracturing, as part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded Prosperity Partnership “Smart Pumping for Subsurface Engineering” project.

The scientific aim of the work is to optimise patterns and sizes of pressure pulses required to maximize a fracture network enabling access to the rock mass.

The position supports and contributes to the fundamental research required to facilitate the engineering of a new generation of well stimulation technology based on the controlled pulsation of fluids.

Your duties will include developing and taking responsibility for the commissioning and testing of a specially designed large sample rock testing unconfined rig (UC cell), integration of the fluid delivery system, fibre optic strain measurement and acoustic measurements. This development will also include synthesis with similar parallel development on the Geo Reservoir Experimental Analogue Technology (GREAT) cell.

In addition you will be expected to both manage the development of the UC cell, contribute to the integration of technologies to the GREAT cell and develop your own scientific program within the constraints of the project.

You will be part of a team including two academic staff members, a PDRA, dedicated technical staff and you will be expected to contribute to the supervision of PhD students.

Training will be given at all stages of work, this position is an exciting opportunity to develop research and technical expertise.

This post is full time and fixed term (30 months) and is available immediately.

USA: $1,400,000 in Small Business Innovation Research Grants Involving Geothermal Energy

EERE Helps American Small Businesses with $21.6 Million for Phase I Innovation Projects (News Release)

American small businesses got nearly a $22 million boost from the Energy Department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. As part of today’s announcement, small businesses are receiving Phase 1 Release II grants that demonstrate technical feasibility for innovations during the first phase of their research. Most Phase 1 awards are for $200,000 for less than one year.

Nine EERE technology offices will fund 109 awards under 12 topics including two for the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) alone and another five under the joint topic of Advanced Manufacturing and Geothermal Technologies Offices:

USA, Hawaii: Ormat Gives Updates on Puna Geothermal Venture

Jordan Hara, PGV plant manager, said that due to the corrosion issues, they have a big job rebuilding generators and everything at the plant. “We probably average of about 40 to 50 contractors on site giving us an hand, from all over the United States. plus we’ve got also hands from our other plants on the mainland helping us out.”

“We’re still assessing the wells and also the resource,” Hara said. “We got bunch of our equipment on site, so that’s ongoing currently. We did start assessing on KS-14 and then we’ll be moving over to the next well.”

Ley also noted that work continues on a risk assessment and vulnerability analysis. “We expected that to be out already, but it’s still taking some time,” ley said. “We’ve got great resource people that have the technical skills and and the scientific background put that together.”

Japan: 46 MW Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plant Begins Commercial Operation

Yuzawa Geothermal Power Generation Corporation, which was jointly established by Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc., has promoted construction works of Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plant since May 2015, and today, this power plant commenced commercial operation.

This plant has a capacity of 46,199 kW and generates electricity utilizing geothermal resources expected in Yuzawa city, Akita prefecture. We have seen no new operation of a large-scale geothermal power plant over 10,000 kW in these 23 years in Japan.

Switzerland: Underground Research Laboratory to Investigate the Long-Term Use of Geothermal Energy has Opened

An underground research laboratory to investigate the long-term use of geothermal energy has opened in the southern Swiss Alps.

The Federal Technical Institute of Zurich (ETHZ) says the facilities – situated in a disused access tunnel of the Matterhorn Gotthard railways in the Bedretto Valley – are a world first.

In cooperation with national and international partners, the ETHZ has installed seven additional seismic stations in and around the rock laboratory.

The Bedretto project wants to show that the construction of a heat exchanger that is sustainable over several decades can be planned and controlled with the aid of hydraulic stimulation processes, according to the promoters.

Applications are now open for the Africa Power Access Accelerator (APAA), designed to support power projects in Africa on preparation, structuring and financing.

The APAA offers selected projects access to advisory, grants, development funding, equity and debt financing, potential partners, and co-developers, aiming to bridge the existing gap between project developers and consultants, technology providers and financiers.

It received over 50 applications on the first application round, which are currently under evaluation, and has now opened the second application window, with submission deadline on June 30.

It is open to businesses working on solar PV, hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal, gas, storage and hybrid solutions, utilising utility, mini-grids, and solar home systems. Projects can be at a variety of phases, and applications will be assessed using criteria such as support by local government, technologies deployed, financial and technical viability, environmental and social aspects, capabilities of the development team, and contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

New Zealand: Te Ahi O Maui Geothermal Plant Boosts Eastland Group Profits

Eastland Group has returned a record $12.1 million to its community shareholding trust, boosted by earnings from the firm’s new geothermal plant at Kawerau.

Chief executive Matt Todd said the firm’s $137 million Te Ahi O Maui geothermal development at Kawerau was an important contributor to the result.

The 25 MW plant, developed in partnership with the A8D Ahu Whenua Trust, was connected to the grid in October, just in time to benefit from months of strong wholesale electricity prices.

“Combined with GDL, our other geothermal plant in Kawerau, Eastland Generation delivered $19.5 million towards our total income,” Todd said in a statement. That was more than twice the $7.7 million of revenue Eastland’s generation business delivered last year.

As Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) moves toward restarting following last year’s Kilauea eruption, a new power purchase agreement with Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO) might be on the table.

Mike Kaleikini, senior director of Hawaii affairs for Ormat, PGV’s parent company, said talks are ongoing with HELCO, and revolve around delinking the cost of power from the price of oil. During peak hours, the first 25 MW PGV sells to HELCO is tied to that cost.

Essentially, that pays PGV, which had a capacity of 38 MW, for reducing the amount of oil the utility uses to generate power. But it also can lead to higher costs for customers.

Kaleikini said PGV is interested in delinking the cost of power from oil to provide more certainty about its revenue. He said the parties entered those talks before the eruption started.

Geothermal Well Test Analysis - Fundamentals, Applications and Advanced Techniques (Elsevier Inc.)

Geothermal Well Test Analysis: Fundamentals, Applications and Advanced Techniques provides a comprehensive review of the geothermal pressure transient analysis methodology and its similarities and differences with petroleum and groundwater well test analysis.

Also discussed are the different tests undertaken in geothermal wells during completion testing, output/production testing, and the interpretation of data. In addition, the book focuses on pressure transient analysis by numerical simulation and inverse methods, also covering the familiar pressure derivative plot.

Global energy investment stabilised in 2018, ending three consecutive years of decline, as capital spending on oil, gas and coal supply bounced back while investment stalled for energy efficiency and renewables, according to the International Energy Agency’s latest annual review.

The findings of the World Energy Investment 2019 report signal a growing mismatch between current trends and the paths to meeting the Paris Agreement and other sustainable development goals.

 Adjusting investment to 2018 cost levels shows a rising trend in spending activity for renewable power, up around 55% since 2010.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Geothermal Energy-Drilling Project Made Possible with Financing Mobilised by the Caribbean Development Bank

St. Vincent and the Grenadines took a major step towards a cleaner and more secure energy future on Monday, May 6, launching a multi-million dollar geothermal energy-drilling project made possible with financing mobilised by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

CDB secured USD 27 million (mn) in financing for the project through contributions from partners, including the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union’s Caribbean Investment Facility (EU-CIF) and the Government of New Zealand.

Polaris Infrastructure Increases its Private Placement Offering of Convertible Debentures (News Release)

Polaris Infrastructure Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, announced today that it has increased the size of its previously announced private placement of convertible debentures to $20,000,000. In addition, Cormark Securities Inc., Clarus Securities Inc., and a syndicate of agents will now have an option to sell an additional $5,000,000 in Convertible Debentures under the offering for total gross proceeds of $25,000,000 (if exercised in full).

As previously announced, the company intends to use the net proceeds of the offering for general corporate purposes and to provide the flexibility to pursue further corporate development opportunities in Peru and similar jurisdictions in Latin America.

Polaris Energy Nicaragua S.A (PENSA) is a subsidiary of Polaris Infrastructure Inc. PENSA operates and owns the San Jacinto-Tizate Geothermal Project, with an installed capacity of 77 MW (72 MW net).

Climate Change: Carbon Offsets for Iron Ore Shipment Helps Geothermal Power Plant Project in Indonesia

RightShip and South Pole deliver first reported entirely carbon offset iron ore shipment for Anglo American (News Release)

Global mining company Anglo American has offset the carbon emissions for an ocean freight voyage from South Africa to Europe, using RightShip’s verified carbon accounting tool and offset credits purchased from South Pole.

The carbon credits purchased to offset this journey will support South Pole’s Gunung Salak Geothermal Energy project in Indonesia. The project has helped to upgrade the capacity of a geothermal plant, enabling it to generate more clean electricity from the same source of geothermal steam thanks to modified turbines and steam gas ejectors. As a result, the Gunung Salak project mitigates approximately 113,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and supplies over 213,000 MWh of clean energy to the local grid each year.

The Gunung Salak geothermal power plant is owned by PT Indonesia Power, a subsidiary of state-owned electricity company, PT PLN (Persero).

Iceland: Geothermal Could Power More Electric Cars

Iceland moving away from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) as capital Reykjavík aims to reduce gas stations by half by 2025 (Iceland Review)

The city council of Reykjavík, Iceland recently approved a plan to reduce the number of gas stations by half in Iceland’s capital by 2025, as one of the city’s environmental initiatives.

While some cities use congestion pricing or low emission zones — like London’s new Ultra Low Emission Zone — Reykjavík is taking another interesting approach as a city looking to get greener and to lower emissions going forward.

There are currently 75 gas stations in the capital area of Reykjavík, and that number will be reduced to around 37 over the next six years, Iceland Review reports.

Iceland is a perfect fit for electric vehicle adoption, being a small island nation with both expensive petrol and nearly 100% renewable electricity generation. Reykjavík proper accounts for more than a third of Iceland’s total population, so a move like this can have a big impact.

Education: Deadline to Apply for $14,000 in Educational Awards is Next Week

Geothermal Resources Council Student Scholarships (News Release)

Total of $14,000 in educational awards to be given to eight students in the international geothermal energy community. Applications must be received by May 24, 2019.

The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) reminds applicants of the impending deadline for the 2019 GRC Scholarship Awards.

To qualify for any of these awards a student must be a GRC member (student memberships are only $20 per year). Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual’s academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.

The following awards are available:
  • Five (5) Marcelo Lippmann Graduate Scholarship Awards of $2500 – to be eligible for one of these awards, the candidate must be enrolled in a graduate-level program at an accredited academic institution at the time of the award (Fall 2019). If selected, each recipient is required to submit a paper on his/her research (or research progress) to be published in the GRC Transactions and deliver results at the meeting as either a poster or oral presentation. If the recipient presents in the year of the award then the full $2500 is awarded at that time; if the recipient defers to present/publish the following year then $750 is withheld until the following year when the recipient presents.
  • Three (3) GRC Undergraduate Scholarship Awards of $500  – to be eligible for one of these awards, the candidate must be a third or fourth year undergraduate at an accredited academic institution at the time of the award (Fall 2019). 
Applications must be received by May 24, 2019 to be considered.

Switzerland: Vinzel Geothermal District Heating Project Gets Federal Grant

GEOENVI webinar - Tackling the environmental concerns for deploying geothermal energy

The first webinar was recorded on May 16th, 2019 and was followed by more than 100 people. The webinar presented the preliminary results of the GEOENVI project, which has been working since November 2018. It has also been open to inputs and questions by participants, which were welcome to provide their perspective or comment on the methodology of the project.

Presentations:

The objective of the GEOENVI project is to answer environmental concerns in terms of both impacts and risks, by first setting an adapted methodology for assessing environment impacts to the project developers, and by assessing the environmental impacts and risks of geothermal projects operational or in development in Europe.

The GEOENVI project has the objective to make sure that deep geothermal energy can play its role in Europe’s future energy supply in an increasingly sustainable way and to create a robust strategy to answer environmental concerns. It will engage with all geothermal stakeholders to ensure the exchange of best practices, the test of harmonized methods in selected areas and then, to facilitate its replication across Europe.
