Indonesia: Geothermal Cost Recovery Contract Scheme Helping to Attract New Investors

Indonesia to raise capacity of geothermal projects to 1GW (sggpnews)

(Courtesy CIA .gov)
Indonesia strives to raise combined capacity of geothermal projects to 1 gigawatt (GW) in 2030, according to the country’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR).

Based on the official data, the geothermal potential in Indonesia may reach 28.5GW. However, the total capacity of geothermal power plants across the country only stood at 2.1GW.

Earlier, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif stated that the ministry continues to attract investors to invest in the new renewable energy sector through the cost recovery contract scheme in the geothermal sector.
He noted that the geothermal sector’s development poses a higher risk than other sectors, so incentives are needed to encourage investment in the field.

Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Services Reform Fabby Tumiwa noted there were a number of obstacles in developing geothermal energy in the country, such as high investment costs due to high exploration and engineering and procurement costs.

It also takes a long development time of up to 11 years to 15 years, Tumiwa said, adding that geothermal price policy has changed six times since 2008.

He said to encourage geothermal utilisation and reduce project development time, the Indonesian government needs to complete a number of things, like a concise and one-door licensing process and a power purchase agreement process.

USA, Nevada: Geothermal Event! GRC Annual Meeting Venue Earns Energy Star Certification

Peppermill Receives EPA Energy Star Certification (KTVN)

Reno's Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino has earned the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification for energy performance. A big part of that is due to the resort's onsite geothermal plant. It taps into the resources underneath the property.

"We take the geothermal out of the ground, we pump it to here we exchange the heat into a water source that we can circulate through the building," said John Kassai, Central Plant Manager for the Peppermill. "Then we take the geothermal, put it back in the ground across the property and we use the hot water and circulate it throughout the whole property."

They use it to heat the buildings, the pools, and the parking ramps in the winter. "As far as I know we're the largest single use geothermal provider in the nation," Kassai said. The Peppermill's energy score puts it in the top 10 percent of hotels in the country.

Republic of Ireland: Possible Geothermal Energy Reservoir Discovered in Dublin Suburbs

A geothermal aquifer in the dilation zones on the southern margin of the Dublin Basin (Oxford Academic)

We present modelling of the geophysical data from the Newcastle area, west of Dublin, Ireland within the framework of the IRETHERM project. IRETHERM's overarching objective was to facilitate a more thorough strategic understanding of Ireland's geothermal energy potential through integrated modelling of new and existing geophysical, geochemical and geological data.

The Newcastle area, one of the target localities, is situated at the southern margin of the Dublin Basin, close to the largest conurbation on the island of Ireland in the City of Dublin and surrounds.

As part of IRETHERM, magnetotelluric (MT) soundings were carried out in the highly urbanized Dublin suburb in 2011 and 2012, and a description of MT data acquisition, processing methods, multi-dimensional geoelectrical models and porosity modelling with other geophysical data are presented.

The deeper conductive layers are interpreted as geothermal-fluid-bearing rocks. Porosity and permeability estimations from the lithological borehole logs indicate the geothermal potential of the bedrock, to deliver warm water to the surface. The fluid permeability estimation, based on Archie's law for porous structures and synthetic studies of fractured zones, suggests a permeability in the range 100 mD–100 D in the study area, which is prospective for geothermal energy exploitation.
