Geoflow Imaging of Auckland, New Zealand is trialling a "game changing" technology to significantly reduce the cost of geothermal exploration - which has stifled growth of geothermal power for decades. If successful, it will open up geothermal baseload, clean energy to hundreds of millions of people around the world.
In order to achieve this ambition, Geoflow Imaging is privileged to announce that it has partnered with Star Energy to trial its technology starting early in 2019. Star Energy has selected Wayang Windu as the site for the trial which is 40 km south of Bandung.

The geothermal procurement mandated in this measure is of immense significance to the Riverside and Imperial County communities in Garcia’s district.
“Areas surrounding the Salton Sea are uniquely ripe for renewable energy development, geothermal being chief among them,” stated Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. “Despite the increased reliability of geothermal, these resources have been greatly neglected in energy conversations. The new power plant is estimated to start producing electricity in the fall of 2018.
At Flúðir, small community in southern Iceland, a new low temperature geothermal plant is rising. The power plant uses a new operating system for the utilization of geothermal heat to produce electricity. EFLA is the main consultant in the project and is responsible for designing the piping system, and all subjects related to the geothermal aspect.
The geothermal well contains hot water that has a temperature of 116°C and the capacity of the well is 45 liters per second. With the Climeon Heat Power modules, it is possible to produce clean energy by utilizing the temperature from 116°C to 76°C and cool the geothermal water. The geothermal fluid heats up a working fluid that is inside the Heat Power units. The system operates at low-pressure levels in comparison to traditional heat power solutions.

USA, Hawaii: Ormat Receives $7.2 Million in Insurance Proceeds for Drilling Rig Destroyed by Lava at Puna Geothermal Venture
Lava insurance paying off for Puna geothermal plant owner (Honolulu Star-Advertiser)
The majority owner of the geothermal power plant idled by lava on Hawaii island recently reported that it is stuck with an initial $3 million revenue loss but expects further losses will be covered by insurance.
Ormat Technologies Inc., the Nevada-based firm heading Puna Geothermal Venture, also said it has already received $7.2 million in insurance proceeds for a drilling rig destroyed by lava.
Insurance held by Ormat covers lost profit and property damage up to $100 million but excludes the first 30 days of lost revenue, the company said.
Doron Blachar, Ormat’s chief financial officer, said on a conference call that it would take at least 18 months of work to restore PGV to operating condition.

The company along with partner Guidance Management Corp. owns the geothermal service contract in the province of Kalinga covering an area of around 26,000 hectares.
The area is estimated to have a power generation potential of between 120 megawatts and 200 MW.

California on it's own is #1 in the world for geothermal energy production, with 2,694 MW of capacity, about 19% of the global total.
California recently set a new goal to increase the renewable content of its electricity from one third to 50 percent by 2030. The state also has a goal to install 12,000 MW of renewable distributed generation. The California Energy Commission is tracking progress toward achieving its renewable goals and the status of permitting and constructing new renewable energy facilities in California.

The deadline for submissions is Friday August 24, 2018.
The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is reminding entrants of the deadline for this year’s Amateur Geothermal Photo Contest. The purpose of the contest is to showcase quality photography featuring geothermal energy around the world.
The winners will be announced at the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo being held in Reno, Nevada, USA from October 14-17.
The first place winner will receive $150, second place - $100, and third place - $75. Honorable Mention photos will receive certificates.
Photographs on any subject related to geothermal energy can be submitted such as geothermal energy production, Enhanced Geothermal systems (EGS), direct use and geothermal heat pumps. Science & Technology: Successful Trial of Microbiological Control Program at Geothermal Power Plant
Success story on ZI-Chem field trial on a major Geothermal plant in West Java (News Release)
The production rate of electricity that can be generated at a geothermal power plant is heavily dependent on the control of microbiological slime in the plant condenser cooling system.
Thailand-based ZI-Chem has recently completed the plant trial for a Microbiological Control Program at an international geothermal company in Indonesia. This program comprised of a unique oxidizing biocide and biodispersant combination to control microbiological growth in cooling tower.
The trial demonstrated the capability of ZI-Chem's biocide and biodispersant products to control microbiological growth below the control limit at a reasonable cost. This program also proved effective at reducing consumption of other chemicals needed to maintain pH levels in the cooling water.
The trial result is the considered significant success by the management of the customer and accepted as a future program for the plant.

Statewide Geothermal Exploration Program: Nomination of Lands (News Release)
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Oil and Gas is soliciting Nominations of Lands with geothermal resources for potential future disposal.
Geothermal energy is a thermal energy resource typically found along major tectonic plate boundaries. The most active geothermal area in the world, known as the Ring of Fire, is located along Alaska’s coast and the contiguous United States’ west coast, where most domestic geothermal power generation occurs. Alaska has millions of acres of state land available for exploration of geothermal resources. The geothermal potential in Alaska is largely unknown, unexplored, and filled with opportunities to offset high electricity rates in urban and rural areas.
The Division administers the geothermal exploration and development program in Alaska. Beginning this year, and biannually thereafter, the Division will solicit an informal Nomination of Lands period to identify areas for designations as proposed geothermal disposal areas (PGDA) for potential future geothermal lease sales or prospecting permits. Nominated lands are not automatically designated as PGDAs or offered for lease or prospecting permit.
To nominate geothermal lands, please provide the Division with a letter of interest identifying state lands to be considered for future disposal. Nominations must be provided to the Division by November 14, 2018. Letters of nomination can be mailed to our offices at 550 W. 7th Ave, Suite 1100, Anchorage, AK 99501 or emailed to dog.geothermal@alaska.gov.

USA, New Mexico: Institute of Mining and Technology to Research Geothermal Membrane Distillation for Large-Scale Use
Bureau of Reclamation selects 16 projects to receive $3.5 million for desalination and water purification research (News Release)
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Brenda Burman announced that 16 entities will receive $3.5 million for laboratory and pilot-scale research projects as part of the Desalination and Water Purification Research Program. The DWPR Program works with Reclamation researchers and partners to develop more innovative, cost-effective and technologically efficient ways to desalinate water.
A pilot-scale project tests a novel process at a sufficiently large scale to determine the technical, practical, and economic viability of the process and are generally preceded by laboratory studies that demonstrate if that the technology works. The $3.5 million will be matched with $4.8 million in non-federal funding.
Included in the seven pilot-scale projects is $200,000 for New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to research Geothermal membrane distillation for large-scale use.

The Geothermal Resources Council 2018 Amateur Photo Contest
The deadline for submissions is August 24, 2018.
The Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) is reminding entrants of the deadline for this year’s Amateur Geothermal Photo Contest. The purpose of the contest is to showcase quality photography featuring geothermal energy around the world.
The winners will be announced at the GRC Annual Meeting & Expo being held in Reno, Nevada, USA from October 14-17.
The first place winner will receive $150, second place - $100, and third place - $75. Honorable Mention photos will receive certificates.
Photographs on any subject related to geothermal energy can be submitted such as geothermal energy production, Enhanced Geothermal systems (EGS), direct use and geothermal heat pumps. These can include photos of well testing, drilling, operation of geothermal equipment, newly developed equipment, or plant operation, construction of a geothermal plant or plant site, and geological areas or surface manifestations (holding potential for geothermal exploration or development). New this year are acceptance of "GIFs" - short animated movies of a few seconds each.
More information on the GRC Amateur Photo Contest, including a submission form, can be found on the GRC website. The deadline for submissions is August 24, 2018.

USA, California: Legislation Would Require Utilities in the Golden State to Purchase Thousands of Megawatts of Geothermal Power
California's energy future is up for grabs. Here are the bills that could pass in the next 3 weeks. (Desert Sun)

AB 893 would require utilities to purchase thousands of megawatts of geothermal power
California could dramatically reshape its energy future in the next few weeks. In the halls of the capitol, lawmakers and lobbyists are debating bills that would bolster renewable energy sources like solar and wind, create an interstate electricity market covering much of the western U.S., make it easier for utilities to charge their customers for wildfire damages, and promote the construction of geothermal and hydroelectric power plants.
Lawmakers could pass all those bills. Or they could do nothing.
Three weeks remain until the legislative session ends August 31, and nobody knows what California's energy landscape will look like after that. The outcome could depend on high-stakes negotiations between labor unions, electric utilities, environmentalists, energy companies, local governments and ratepayer advocates — not to mention Gov. Jerry Brown, who has one last chance to advance California's climate change and renewable energy goals in the Legislature before he leaves office early next year.
Two bills are of particular interest to the desert. One of them AB 893 from Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, would require utilities to purchase thousands of megawatts of geothermal power, potentially jump-starting development of geothermal power plants at the southern end of the Salton Sea.

Ormat Technologies, owners of Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), revealed in a Wednesday earnings call that reopening the power plant would take at least 18 months.
Isaac Angel, CEO of Ormat, said in the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Wednesday that reopening PGV as soon as possible is a priority, but even when conditions at the facility are safe enough to resume operations, the reactivation process will take time.
“Unfortunately, as we all know, it’s very, very difficult to estimate how long the Puna flow will continue, even though there is (a) decrease,” Angel said. “In any case, if the flow will … stop completely, or even it could be very slow, we will be able to look into bringing the power plant back. It will take us at least 18 months to do so.”
The plant was shut down in early May after the lower Puna eruption of Kilauea. Geothermal wells were quenched with cold water and sealed, with three of the wells subsequently overrun by lava. Lava also consumed a warehouse and a substation.

Energy. The electric potential measured in the country reaches 3,800 MW, 72% of which is located between Arica and Antofagasta.
A possible exploitable geothermal potential that ranges between 1,300 MW and 3,800 MW, 72% of which is concentrated between the Arica and Parinacota and Antofagasta regions, was recently calculated for the country as part of the Geothermal Roundtable. To take advantage of this resource, the Minister of Energy, Susana Jiménez, announced that they will send a bill to the Congress aimed at promoting new generation projects that use this renewable source.
Effectively, the Geothermal Roundtable was a public-private meeting whose purpose was determining the current status of geothermal projects in Chile and finding solutions allowing these projects to become an economical alternative for the development of the energy sector. Similarly, identifying the advantages of its incorporation within the operation of the electricity system and finding possible actions to be taken to achieve a greater use of this energy source.
Among its results, it concluded that there has been enough exploration in Chile to calculate the technically exploitable potential of the explored areas, ranging from 1,300 MW to 3,800 MW, and with a range of investments between US$ 9,000 and US$ 25,000 million.
72% of the geothermal potential for electricity production is concentrated in the mountain range of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions.
The other 28% is distributed in the existing mountain range between the Metropolitan and Los Lagos Region. It is worth mentioning that our country concentrates more than 25% of the active volcanoes in the world.

Turkey: GRC Member's View of Geothermal Energy Heritage

We might view Turkey as a "new entrant" to the 1 GW Geothermal Country Club, one of a small number of countries that can claim the same. Although that is surely something to celebrate, Turkish institutions would be able to say that they are simply rediscovering something that has always been part of their natural heritage. Plus, they are harnessing their innate strengths to do so.
Certainly the country as a whole faces several adversaries on many fronts: borders, currency and economic challenges. Some might say "Turkey is at a crossroads" regarding their upcoming decisions, such as extending feed-in tariffs that will lead to more native resources used for electrical generation. These decisions will strongly influence geothermal development over the coming years. It would be more apt to say that "Turkey IS the crossroads," as an essential bridge of the world, and their strong national character, which has served them well for centuries, will continue to do so.

USA, Idaho: United States Senator's Staff Visits Geothermal Power Plant
On August 2nd the staff for United States Senator Jim Risch representing Idaho, toured Ormat’s Raft River geothermal plant in southeastern Idaho. Raft River was built in 2007 and provides 9 megawatts of baseload, emission-free electricity – enough to power over 7,500 Idaho homes.
Team Risch learned about the virtues that Raft River provides to grid stability in the region and the opportunity for continued development of geothermal resources in the region.
