USA, Alaska: New Geothermal Well to be Drilled on Akutan Island

The City of Akutan in the Aleutian Islands has obtained an Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission permit to drill a third geothermal test well on the island. The city drilled two test wells in 2010.

GRC Member and Western Washington University assistant professor of Geology Pete Stelling has been researching how to turn the island’s volcanic core into a geothermal power source that could not only cut the needed amount of imported fuel into a fraction of its current level but transform the quality of life for its inhabitants.
