Small Steps: Ten Years of Geothermal Power in Iran (PowerTechnology)

Perhaps best known for its oil production and membership of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Iran has rarely featured in discussions about the cutting edge of renewable power. In the near future however, that could be set to change.

Iran: Enel Equipment for Geothermal Power Plant Will be Installed Soon

Italy to reopen LOC to Iran’s utility industries (Mehr News Agency)

Iran’s energy minister announced that Italy has opened a Line of Credit (LOC) for its firms to make investment in Iran’s water and electricity industries.

Speaking at a joint session with the Italian Minister of the Environment Gian Luca Galletti, Iran’s Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said that Enel has built the equipment for Iran’s first geothermal power house which will be installed soon.

The visiting official went on to maintain that “presently, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and Iran’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance are working on a legal document on how to remove the obstacles ahead of reopening credit lines between the two countries which will hopefully yield results in coming days.”

At the end of the session, the two sides agreed on preparing a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on venues of cooperation between Iran and Italy in the utility sector.

Hossein Najm, an Energy Market Independent Advisor in Iran, reported on Twitter that ‏ Enel has supplied the 1st geothermal powerplant in the middle-east
in the northwest of the country at a height of 3,000 meters on Mount Sabalan. 11 wells have been drilled with a capacity of 55 MW.

Iran: 55 MW Geothermal Power Plant by September 2017

Iran's Geothermal Power Plant Launch Slated for 2017 (Financial Tribune)

Iran Hopes that its first geothermal plant would help uplift steam-related industries such as greenhouses, fish farming and tourism in the Ardebil region

Iran expects to start producing electricity from the heat of the earth less than a year from now as it takes steps to slowly move away from fossil fuel power stations that account for more than 80% of its installed power capacity.

Hamid Chitchian, the energy minister, said the country's first geothermal power plant in Meshgin Shahr, Ardebil Province near the Azerbaijan border in the northwest, will be launched by September 2017, IRNA reported.

The 55 MW plant is also billed as the first geothermal power station in the Middle East.

Iran: Plans to Develop Geothermal Energy and Other Reneables

Iran plans first tender to draw $12 billion renewable-energy investment (REVE)

(Courtesy CIA.gov)
Iran is planning its first tender for utility-scale renewable-energy projects by year end as it begins a green power build out that could draw $12 billion of investment by the time it’s complete.

The nation wants to install 5 gigawatts of renewable energy in the next five years and an additional 2.5 gigawatts by 2030, Iran’s energy minister Hamid Chitchian said.

Iran will tender 1 gigawatt of wind and as many as 3 gigawatts of solar, likely in several stages, Chitchian said. It is also seeking to build biomass and geothermal plants and swap natural gas for electricity with Armenia.

Iran: "Could be 9th Geothermal Energy Producer "

South African Min: Iran can be 9th geothermal energy producer (irna)

South African Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson said on Saturday that Iran can become the 9th geothermal energy producer.

She made the remarks in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hamid Chitchian. Pettersson welcomed presence of Iranian companies operating in energy generation from his country's renewable energies.

She said her country is willing to cooperate with Iran in photovoltaic and technology transfer. 'Our power networks are not stable and we hope Iranian energy ministry will help us provide sustainable energy supplies.'

Global: Aid Agencies Commit to Continue Funding of Renewable Energy Projects

ADFD, Irena sign agreement on renewable energy projects (Trade Arabia)

Agencies have funded two geothermal energy projects

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has signed an agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) to ensure the effective allocation of $350 million of funds pledged by ADFD for renewable energy projects in developing countries.

The Project Facility has already allocated $144 million worth of funds over three cycles for renewable energy, which will see 15 projects supported from the Pacific to Africa and from the Caribbean to the Middle East.

A 10 to 15 megawatt geothermal project in St. Vincent and the Grenadines received a loan of 15 million dollars. The project will connect to the energy grid to provide a consistent power source for the entire country and will influence the deployment of additional geothermal projects in the Caribbean. The entire population of 104,000 people will benefit from the project.

A five megawatt, first-of-its-kind, small-scale geothermal project in Ardebil, northern Iran is received a loan of six million dollars. The geothermal power plant will produce electricity and thermal energy for rural Ardebil to provide local heating, greenhouse agriculture and fish farming. Governmental organizations such as the electricity, gas and environment departments, and the local population of 150,000 people will benefit from the project.

Iran: Enel Could Invest in Geothermal Power Project

Enel seeks investment in Iran energy (Trend News Agency)

Enel is seeking investment in Iran in the field of geothermal energy.

If reaching an agreement, Enel and Iran’s Renewable Energy Organization will invest in a geothermal-to-electrical power project in northwestern Iran, Tasnim news agency reported January 24.

Iran is already constructing a 50 MW plant in the Meshkin Shahr geothermal zone in Ardabil Province in northwestern Iran, the first in the Middle East. The power plant is expected to come on stream in two years.  It is not clear whether Enel will invest in the same project or launch a new one in the area.

Iran’s power plants are mostly hydro or fossil fuel-powered. Renewable energy makes up less than one percent of energy used in Iran. Energy intensity is also much higher in Iran than the global standard.
