India: Exploration for Geothermal Power Resources Begins in Gujarat State

India exploring regions to set up its first geothermal power plant-Industry (Global News24)

India is set on a trajectory to realizing the government’s commitment to generating 175 GW of renewable energy by the year 2022.

Giving a new dimension to PM Modi’s speech at the UNGA, the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) has started exploration for plant sites in the state of Gujarat for setting up India’s 1st geothermal power plant. This plant will use the heat stored in the earth’s crust for the production of electricity.

In India, though, finding a very hot source of energy is highly unlikely for its closeness to the equator and other geographical factors, but it should be noted that the new technique which is used by ISR is a breakthrough technology, it’s called 3D Magnetotelluric (MTM.T.) location technology. This technique which is pioneered by the ISR used 3D imaging technology to find the best spots for the location of underground sources of energy which is a necessity for setting up a geothermal power plant, the ISR has started surveys across the state of Gujarat as it feels that the state has the best possible geographical parameters to hold the plant.
