Multilateral technical cooperation is in the pipeline to strengthen Nicaragua’s energy sector, such as the potential buildout of the nation's geothermal park.
Information from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) shows that the regional lender has been tapped by the Central American country’s government for financial support to shore up the institutional capacity of the energy ministry and state power transmission company Enatrel.
The funds would help with geothermal pre-investment studies – particularly for the Cosigüina project – and environmental management of commercial wells. Other geothermal projects include Mombacho and Casita-San Cristóbal.
Nicaragua’s current geothermal production comes from Momotombo Power (77.5MW) and Polaris Energy Nicaragua (PEN) (77MW).
