San Serriffe Geothermal Association to Bid to Host the World Geothermal Congress (Mutley Fool)
In 2016, Global Geothermal News reported on new geothermal resource on San Serriffe, a remote island in the Indian Ocean. In an update on the project last year local environmentalists said that oil & gas wells could be repurposed for geothermal energy.
In an attempt to jump-start the geothermal energy industry on the islands, the San Serriffe Geothermal Association has announced it will bid to host the World Geothermal Congress in 2023. Already a destination for the jet-set, San Serriffe offers cheap flights with the discount airline "Gosh!" from every continent except Australia (a dispute over ownership of the vegemite mines on the island has led to the breaking of relations with the Aussies).
The republic of San Serriffe is located on the seismically active mid-indian ocean ridge near the Seychelle Islands. The potential capacity of the renewable resource has been estimated as upwards of 500 MWe.
San Serriffe comprises of two islands, Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse, shaped curiously like a semi-colon. Since it's first exposure to the outside world on April 1, 1977, the island has struggled for acceptance but now with the discovery of geothermal energy it could become a powerhouse for the southern Indian Ocean.
