Netherlands: 80 Degrees C Geothermal Water Helps Grow Dutch Soft Fruit

Sustainable energy in the soft fruit sector (News Release)

At the end of February Tuinbouwtoeleverancier Mertens organized an information meeting for growers of soft fruit.

The meeting focused on making cultivation more sustainable. Californië BV, in the person of Peter Smulders, was asked to give insight into the sustainability opportunities in the energy field. And in addition to tell a little more about Geothermal Energy, one of the most important pillars on which energy sustainability is based. With two doublets, Californië is one of the few areas where this energy source is used optimally and where there is a lot of experience.

Water at 80-85°C is pumped up and distributed among the horticultural entrepreneurs and then subsequently pumped back down into the ground. The return temperature is approximately 30°C. During the year, 70-80% of the energy consumption can be supplied by geothermal energy.
