East Africa: Status of the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility

In 2012, the African Union Commission (AUC) in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund (EU-ITF), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and KfW Bankengruppe set up a funding program of more than $100 million for the development of geothermal resources in East Africa, called the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF).

Since then, many projects have been awarded grants and there are very good perspectives for the future. Think GeoEnergy spoke with the Head of Energy Division of the AUC and GRMF Project Manager, Rashid Ali Abdallah, to learn more about the current activities of the program and its impact on the geothermal sector in East Africa.
