Geothermal Heat: Full Speed Ahead (International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam)
A large part of the Dutch heat demand could be covered with sustainable and cost-efficient geothermal heat. Some choices should be made for this transition to happen.
Based on both the current knowledge of the underground and on drillings, it seems likely that geothermal heat can meet the heat demand of a large part of the Netherlands.
In addition, and compared to other, more small-scale solutions such as solar boilers and heat pumps, it is the most cost-effective form of heat production by far (in euros per year).
Geothermal heat has yet another advantage: its visible spatial impact is minimal. That means it is unlikely to provoke a lot of public resistance in this regard (in contrast to, for example, wind energy), which allows large-scale implementation.
