Geothermal Demonstration to Start This Month (Minot Daily News)

Researchers test geothermal energy to power oil field

Oil isn't the only energy source being pulled out of the ground in the Bakken. There's untapped energy in underground water that researchers now are hoping to turn into electricity to power the oil field.

The University of North Dakota School of Engineering & Mines, Grand Forks, plans to begin a demonstration project this month to test a geothermal system developed over the past several years specifically for oil-field application.

Development had started in 2009 after the U.S. Department of Energy put out a request for proposals for a demonstration on generating power in an organic environment. The School of Engineering & Mines had been looking for an opportunity to build on existing research in this area.
