University Applies for Geothermal Drilling Permit (Crewe Chronicle)

6,000 foot well will reach known geothermal resources


Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has applied for permission to drill for geothermal energy at its Crewe campus. MMU wants to use the alternative energy source to power its buildings.

The application is due to be considered by Cheshire East Council’s strategic planning committee on August 26. If it gets the go-ahead it will be the first geothermal site in the UK.

The application for land at the Crewe Green Road campus is for a single vertical well drilled to a depth of 2km below ground level together with associated infrastructure, which will include above ground well head.
