Hawaii Governor Signs Landmark RPS Bill (Recharge)
Hawaii has become the first US state to adopt a 100% renewable portfolio standard and aims to reach that goal by 31 December 2045 under a bill signed into law by Governor David Ige on Monday.
Previously, Hawaii had a 40% clean energy mandate by 2030 and was ahead of schedule to meet that goal, generating 22% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2014.
House Bill 623 sets aggressive RPS interim goals for electric utilities operating in the state: 30% by the end of 2020, up from 25%; 40% by 31 December 2030, which is unchanged, and 70% by the end of 2040.
