Plans for Clean Energy are Right on Course (Daily Nation)

Since the inauguration of Olkaria I power station in 1981, the first geothermal power plant in Africa, Kenya has forged a path to leadership in geothermal exploration on the continent.

The country now shares its geothermal expertise with countries such as Rwanda, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Comoros, which plan to exploit their geothermal resources.

With the implementation of the 280 MW now behind us, our eyes are set on our next phase of development. In the next three to five years, KenGen hopes to bring in an additional 560 MW, all from geothermal.

We have identified a potential 1,000 MW in the Olkaria area. Only 440 MW has been developed. By 2018, KenGen plans to develop a further 460 MW of geothermal power towards the final target of 560 MW to reach the full potential of the Olkaria field.
