PM Abe Announces Support For Geothermal Energy During Fukushima Visit (House of Japan)
Expanded financial support will be allocated for geothermal power -- and regulations in this area will become loosened -- in an effort to promote the implementation of alternative energy, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced during a May 31 press conference in the town of Yanaizu, Fukushima Prefecture, where he was paying a visit.
Abe also said that a Cabinet decision is scheduled to be made later this month regarding a policy package for the revitalization of Fukushima Prefecture. He explained that the package focuses primarily upon the creation of a joint government-private team, to be tasked with supporting businesses devastated by the March 2011 accident at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.
"Japan must harness the possibilities that geothermal energy offers us," Abe emphasized.
