Geothermal energy is a largely untapped but universally available and renewable resource with the potential to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the main cause of human-induced global warming.
This is vitally important because if global warming is to be limited to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, humankind cannot afford to burn more than a quarter of the world's remaining reserves of fossil fuel, researchers say.
Most efforts to switch to alternative forms of energy have concentrated on solar and wind power, both of which have key drawbacks: they work only when the sun shines or the wind blows.
