Modoc Schools to Add Geothermal Heat (Herald and News)
Efforts to provide heat Alturas schools with geothermal energy are heating up. Construction of a $4 million geothermal heating system that will be used at three Alturas schools and the Alturas swimming pool is expected to begin this fall and be operable for the 2016, according to Tom O’Malley, Modoc Joint Unified School District superintendent.
He said the project will go out for bid in July with construction expected to begin in September. Tentative plans envision completing the work by mid-February 2016 with the system online after that.
The project will use an existing geothermal well, which previously tested at producing 400 gallons of 183-degree water a minute. According to a project report, the system will provide geothermal heat for the neighboring Modoc Middle and Elementary schools, expand the heating system at Modoc High School, and heat the Alturas swimming pool.
The entire system will be routed to a re-injection well for discharge back into the aquifer. O’Malley said the system will be designed to allow for potential future use by Modoc County facilities and a proposed new hospital.
