First Round of Helicopter and Ground Surveys for Geothermal Development Completed (StLuciaNewsOnline.com)
Experts from New Zealand and the United States carried out helicopter surveys over the town of Soufriere over a two day period. Equipped with special devices the helicopter surveyed aeromagnetics with the aim of detecting various faults in the earth`s surface which provide conductivity for geothermal development.
Geophysicist John Seabert headed the helicopter surveys and says that the data collected is of high quality and will aid in pinpointing specific areas for possible geothermal development.
The data is being studied by scientists and processors in Denver, Colorado who are expected to submit data maps detailing their findings in the coming weeks.
Concurrent with the aerial surveys, geochemical studies were undertaken in and around the Town of Soufriere by a special team of geoscientists. Samples of water, gas, rock and soil were collected for testing that will better inform the geothermal exploration process. The results of the surveys are scheduled to be released in September 2015. The experts will next take to the air in June 2015 to conduct lidar surveys using a special small aircraft.
