Geothermal power generation can supplement Fiji's hydro power and help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, says Geothermal Electric Ltd. CEO Tim Daniel.

He said Costa Rica was the first country to achieve 100 per cent of its electricity generation without fossil fuels for a period of more than 75 days.

"This is a remarkable achievement built on the backbone of hydro-generation and geothermal power, supplemented by solar and wind. A power generation mix we are likely to be able to emulate here in Fiji should our geothermal power projects be successful."

"And it looks like the savings on fossil fuels will deliver a cut in the electricity price of up to 15 per cent in the near future for Costa Ricans - putting cash back in the pockets of the people," he said.

He said these were the kind of savings Fiji needed and were achievable with geothermal power generation.
