GRC Member Asks Teachers to Spread 'Wow' (WisNews)

A past recipient of a GRC Scholarship and a National Geographic Explorer close to finishing his Ph.D in geophysics, 27-year-old Andres Ruzo gave a presentation to the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers March 6 at Kalahari. He focused on how to make students more engaged.

He said the wow factor is the key to making students engaged. A young person can read the Harry Potter books and remember every detail of the story. Teachers need to give that kind of sensation to their students.

Andres explained that active geothermal — the most common example being volcanoes — produces energy. Work is being done to harness this energy from abandoned oil and gas wells. The technology has been shown to work on a small scale. It uses the same tools as the oil companies, so an advance in oil technology is an advance in geothermal energy.
