We welcome Simbol’s move in anticipation that it will power economic growth for this depressed area and help spur renewable energy development that will benefit the Salton Sea and the environment as a whole.
Pleasanton-based Simbol says it will hire 400 workers for the 18-month construction project and the plant itself should employ about 180 once it is up and running. Residents of Imperial County, which had the highest unemployment rate in California in November at 22.6 percent, could get some of those jobs.
Meanwhile, all of us who are neighbors of the ailing Salton Sea ultimately could benefit from the Simbol project.
