Geothermal Energy Bill Gets Cold Shoulder (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
Utility customers in San Diego County won't have to buy more electricity from geothermal power plants after all.
California lawmakers abandoned proposed legislation -- ending their session Sunday without a vote -- that would have ordered the state's major investor-owned utilities to buy more electricity from power plants that harness underground heat from deep within the earth's crust.
Those utilities opposed Senate Bill 1139 as a unnecessary burden on customers, while other energy producers, including the solar industry, objected to setting aside a portion of the power market for one technology.
