Kengen to Construct Industrial Park at Olkaria Geothermal Project (Kenya Broadcasting Corporation)
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has set aside 1,300 acres in Olkaria for the construction of an industrial park. Kengen Managing Director Albert Mugo says the company is working with the Export Processing Zone Authority in setting up the industrial park that would target power-intensive firms.
KenGen has already identified 5 sites in the geothermal rich area for the construction of the industrial park. Mugo says the company will offer subsidized power to factories within the industrial park as an incentive. Mugo says several companies have already expressed interest in the project.
These developments emerge in the wake of fears that the 11.5 billion shillings Olkaria 4 project may be behind schedule after it went beyond its scheduled April completion date. However, KenGen says the 280 MW project is on schedule and that the first phase comprising 140 MW is already connected to the national grid.
