Tipping the Scales for Geothermal Energy in the Golden State (Fierce Energy)

A battle for the renewable energy industry is currently underway in California, but there is hope that legislation is going to diversify the state's energy industry by creating a more level playing field for those providing energy in the state.

California's green initiatives currently provide subsidies to renewable energy producers, but those not producing wind or solar are saying those subsidies don't take all factors into account -- and renewables like geothermal are getting left behind.

AB 2363 -- the Renewable Energy Diversity Act -- introduced by Assemblyman Brian Dahle, is meant to give companies an equal opportunity in the utility procurement process.

According to a statement by Assemblyman Dahle, "AB 2363 ensures the State's public utilities procure a diverse and cost-effective mix of new and existing renewable resources to meet California's renewable portfolio standard. This bill will require the Public Utilities Commission to appropriately value the reliability benefits of renewable technologies such as geothermal and biomass."
