Green Desert: Long-Term Geothermal Solution Still Needed (Desert Sun)

Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez’s decision this week to pull a bill he had long championed, aimed at pushing renewable energy development, and specifically geothermal power, at the Salton Sea, is a disappointing development for a couple reasons.
Pérez decided to kill the bill, he said in a Thursday interview with The Desert Sun, after it emerged from a series of committee votes in the Assembly with a provision that could have opened the door for utilities to add the cost of integrating intermittent solar and wind to the electric grid in how they figure the costs of renewable energy. The geothermal industry has long supported such a move as a way to make its 24/7 base-load power more competitive.
