Kalgoorlie Set for Summer with Geothermal Pool (Science Network Western Australia)

In a Western Australia first, geothermal energy is being harnessed on a commercial scale to heat a public swimming pool in Kalgoorlie.

The geothermal water heating system is almost complete and will heat the Olympic swimming pool at the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Center.

The geothermal heating system comprises two sections; a shallow network of coiled thin tubing buried horizontally in a trench 1.5m deep and a deep series of vertical tubes. The chosen deep system, doesn’t require refrigerants and is made up of fifty 127mm wide boreholes drilled to a depth of 100m underground
