The city of Aspen has again extended the deadline on a project drilling a geothermal test well.
After encountering water pockets in the alluvial layer that slowed the process, which has been ongoing since April, crews with Dan’s Water Well and Pump Service of California are making much quicker progress now that they've hit a shale-rock layer known as the Belden Formation, city officials said.
Drillers have reached about 580 feet with the new hole as of Monday, Rice said. The goal is to go down to between 1,000 and 1,500 feet, where anecdotal evidence has indicated there might be water hot enough to support a geothermal utility.
