Erupting Philippine Volcano Kills 5 (The Washington Post)

Mayon Volcano is about 15 kms south-east of the Tiwi geothermal field on the northeast flank of Mt. Malinao, another nearby volcano.

One of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, Mt. Mayon, rumbled to life Tuesday, spewing room-sized rocks toward nearly 30 surprised climbers, killing five and injuring others that had to be fetched with rescue helicopters and rope.

Tuesday’s eruption was normal for the restive Mayon, said Renato Solidum, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
